I heard this argument go in many directions. So let’s assume that the boat and truck combination DO weight over 10,000 lbs. Is the private party required to have a DOT number? Do your research before you answer this one is my suggestion.

It depends. If the trucks GVW rating is over 10,000 lbs. then yes. If it is less than 10,000 then no. You will however have to just through some hoops with the state DOT office to get your insurance on file with them. You can find DOT office contact information about shipping your boat by going here.
