Each state or province has different regulations. The above is a North American average. Regulations for heavy haul and oversize trucking can be very complex once a shipment has been determined “heavy” or “oversize” and there is a classification system within each state that can even qualify a shipment as a “super load”. Once dimensions or weights exceed the legal maximums transport permits are required. Some shipments may require pilot cars or even pilot cars equipped with height poles or the trucking company may be required to have a route survey performed. It’s important to consult a professional before attempting to transport any objects, machinery or equipment that is oversize or over weight.

Do I need a trucking permit? Legal load limits.

Georgia maximum load limits until a trucking permit is required.

Length:  75 feet maximum overall combined including overhang. However, 60 feet maximum length on some routes.
Width: 8 feet maximum on some roads but on main highways and Interstates 8 feet and 6 inches is the maximum width.
Height: 13 feet and 6 inches.
Weight:  GVW 80,000 pounds overall combined. Single axle is 20,340 pounds, tandem axles is 34,000 pounds and tridem axles depends on the spacing  but is 20,340 pounds maximum on each axle in the configuration.
Overhang: Overhang in not detailed much by Georgia state DOT so if you are in excess of 60 feet in length overall combined we strongly suggest you contact the oversize permitting office by telephone below.

Routine oversize and heavy-haul trucking permits.

These maximum dimensions/weights are considered routine oversize or heavy-haul trucking permits in Georgia:

Length: Under 120 feet long was the old rule but as of 06/26/18 it seems there’s no limit on length if that is the only dimension over routine. Also a legal
Weight: Any single axle routine permit is 23,000 pounds, tandem axles is 46,000 pounds, tridem axles is 60,000 pounds, quadem axles is 92,000 pounds. Gross maximum routine permit weight limitations are: 5 axles 100,000 pounds, 6 axles 125,000 pounds, 7 axles 148,000 pounds, 8 axles 150,000 pounds. If over 150,000 pounds it’s a superload.
Width: 15 feet and 6 inches. However, on some routes 16 feet is permitted with 1 front pilot car and 1 rear escort. Mobiles and pre-fab homes are limited to 95 feet in length overall.
Height: Under 14 feet tall.
Overhang: This is a very odd state as far as overhang is concerned. Look below under superloads and try the actual state documentation or simply give them a call at the number listed below.
Notes: Georgia mentions a legal 53 trailer with no over all length restrictions on federal interstates and “STAA” designated routes. This isn’t real clear to our staff as no overhang limits would then be governed by maximum lengths. But with no maximum length if that is the only dimension that is over routine limits then we assume any length can be permitted. BE ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN TO ALWAYS REFER TO YOUR ACTUAL OVERSIZE TRUCKING PERMIT FOR ANY DISCREPANCIES.

Ultimately Georgia superloads are classified on a base-by-case basis if they exceed the maximum weights or dimensions mentioned above in “routine permits” however there are exceptions to the rules. Legal travel times for oversize and heavy haul loads.

Travel times and restrictions for heavy-haul and oversize loads:

Georgia travel times unless otherwise stated on your permit are as follows; Monday thru Saturdays from one-half hour after sunrise until one-half hour before sunset Eastern Standard Time or Eastern Daylight time depending on spring or fall. No travel is permitted on Sundays unless stated on your permit. No movement is permitted on the following holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. I-285 is the boundary for Atlanta and travel within it is restricted and not permitted at all unless you are picking up or delivering within – if so travel times are not permitted from 6 AM until 9 AM and from 4 PM until 6 PM on weekdays M-F. Shipments in excess of 10 feet in width may not travel more than 55 miles per hour. Any permitted shipment that is in excess of 16 feet in width may only travel between 10 AM and and 3 PM in and around major cities. Any permitted shipment that is in excess of 12 feet in width may not travel under any circumstances if visibility is restricted to less than 600 feet or wind speed in in excess of 25 miles per hour.

Any oversize or heavy-load must be clearly identified by the appropriate signs such as “OVERSIZE LOAD” OR “HEAVY-HAUL LOAD” or other variations that are specific. Signs must be mounted on the front of the truck and rear of item being transported. Sign dimensions must be no less than 6 feet wide and 12 inches in height. Sign must have a yellow background with black letters not less than 8 inches tall. Front and rear of oversize combination must be flagged with red or orange florescent flags 18 inches square. The power unit must be equipped with a amber light – note you must purchase a amber light permit to operate one in the state of Georgia.

DETAILED VERSION

Length: Over 75 feet but less than 100 feet 1 rear escort of pilot car is required. Over 100 feet but less than 125 feet long requires 1 rear escort vehicle. Over 125 feet long requires 1 front pilot car and  1 rear escort vehicle.
Height: Over 15 feet and 6 inches requires 1 lead pilot car in front of truck equipped with a height pole.
Width: On 2 lane roads over 12 feet but less than 14 feet and 8 inches requires 1 rear escort vehicle behind the shipment.  On 2 lane roads over 14 feet and 8 inches but less than 16 feet wide requires 1 pilot car vehicle in front of the truck and 1 rear chase escort vehicle behind the load.  On 4 lane roads over 12 feet but less than 14 feet and 8 inches requires 1 rear escort vehicle.  On Interstates over 14 feet and 8 inches wide but less than 16 inches will require 1 chase rear escort vehicle.  Requirements for loads over 16 feet wide will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Pilot cars/escort vehicle certifications and requirements.

Pilot car or escort vehicle mandatory operator certifications and vehicle requirements:

You must be certified (a good read) to operate a pilot car or escort vehicle in the state of Georgia (call: 888-262-8306). You must obtain a amber light permit ($2 fee 2 weeks in advance) in order to operate in the state of Georgia (call: 404-624-7211 for more information). Amber lights need to strobe and must have a minimum base size of 8 inches in diameter and be placed at the top of the vehicle. Of course newer light-bars are being accepted as pictured below. The minimum candle power rating is 35,000 or must be clearly visible from no less than 1/4 mile away. A front “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign (yellow background with 8 inch black lettering) that is no less that 6 feet wide and 1 foot tall is required to mounted on the front of all lead pilot car vehicles and on the rear of all chase escort vehicles. Pilot cars and escort vehicles are required to be equipped with 2-way communications and be in constant contact with all parties related to shipment being transported. Stop/slow paddle a minimum of 18 inches across. Safety helmet and safety vest/jacket that must be worn when exiting the vehicle. 9 yes 9 safety road triangles 17 inches tall. 8 road flares, 3 safety cones 18 inches tall, 5 fire extinguishers, first-aid kit, spare-tire, traffic wand flash-light with spare batteries. Vehicles used should either be a truck no less than 1/4 ton but no more than 17,000 pounds (GVW) or a passenger vehicle with no more than 2,000 pounds (GVW). Both sides of pilot cars must have a sign detailing the companies name and contact information visible from no less than 50 feet. Pilot cars are required to have a minimum of 2 red or orange safety colored flags mounted on the front or rear of vehicle no less than 18 inches square in shape. Passengers are not allowed with the exception of certified individuals in training status. No pets. All pilot cars and escorts must have headlights turned on low beam when operating and have lights on only when in operation (not when preparing to operate or pulled over in a turn out). Signs must be covered when not in operation. Oversize loads must pull over to allow for traffic to pass which is the only time it is appropriate to continue operating lights. Do not operate lights during pre-trip planning or any other time when not in full operation leading or chasing the shipment.

Length: Since Saskatchewan Province has no said length restrictions your overall length approval will depend on your proposed route.
Width: No set maximums, depends on routing.
Height: No set maximums, depends on routing.
Weight: Saskatchewan is tough.  No single axles numbers, 48,000 pounds (21772.434 kilograms) on tandem axles, 72,000 pounds (32658.651 kilograms) on tridem axles, if you are over 60,000 pounds (27215.542 kilograms) on tridem axles prepare for a bridge survey as it will probably be required..
Overhang: No set limits, depends on routing.

Saskatchewan superloads.

Requirements for extra heavy or extra legal/dimensional (superloads) in SK.

Typically so we’re not publishing too much information a superload is defined by Saskatchewan Province as any shipment with weights and dimensions that exceed those published above in “Routine Permits”. There are exceptions but everything depends on proposed routing and road/weather conditions and if frost laws are in effect.

Required flags and markers for oversize/heavy-haul shipments loaded onto truck trailers.

Know how to mark your load and what signs are required by your permit.

Lights, flags and markers:
If over 120.078 inches wide (3.05 meters) you will need amber lights for night running and flags for daytime travel.  A WIDELOAD or “D” sign is required for all wideloads over 120.078 inches wide (3.05 meters) however a “OVERSIZE LOAD” banner is NOT allowed.  If you are moving at night any required banners must be illuminated with additional amber light in the center of the rear.  If over 10′ 9″ (3.2766 meters) wide the cab of the tractor must be mounted with an amber light.  If over 82 feet (24.9966 meters) long you MUST have a “D” sign or LONG LOAD banner mounted on the rear.  If not transporting a load you must cover ANY signs.

NOTES:  Lift axles are not permitted.  Flip axles can be used if trailer king pin to center distance is is less than 45′ 5″, the trailer is no longer than 53′ and the load is classified as NON DIVISIBLE.  A tractor wheelbase from the center of the steer axle to the center of the drive axle can not measure over 244″ unless you permit the load with a longer wheelbase AND IF they approve it.  This only applies to oversize permits and overweight will not be eligible.  A tridem drive tractor is NOT recognized by the Province of Saskatchewan except for moves that are large and NON DIVISIBLE, IF a tridem drive tractor IS allowed it MUST have a wheel base of no less than 260″ and no greater than 268″.  A spread axles trailer that has axles spacings of greater than 6′ is considered a single axle for weight calculations and is not allowed to carry more than a combined total weight of 20,000 pounds or 10,000 pounds per axle.  EXCEPT when in the case of when the object being shipped is NOT over 37,500 pounds loaded on the spread.  Please leave Saskatchewan experiences below.  This is a tough Province to get solid numbers out of and our viewers can use your experience to help them.

Frost and thaw laws constantly change due to weather conditions in Saskatchewan. Find out if there in effect:

Saskatchewan Province does have spring weight restrictions and the roads and highways are dependent on conditions.  These restrictions usually apply to all secondary roads and not main highways.  Overall weight reductions may be imposed in some areas.  Check with Saskatchewan Province permit office for clarification.

Holiday restrictions vary, contact SGI permit office to see if you can travel or not.  Daytime travel only for loads over 82′ in length, 12′ 2″ in width and 16′ in height.  No movement is allowed on Friday after 3:00 pm from July 1 until Labor day.  Night time travel is permitted if under the above maximums but must have amber lights on all 4 outer most corners and reflective sign on rear indicating OVERSIZE or LONG LOAD.

When pilot cars or escort vehicles are required.

Heavy-haul or oversize loads may be required to be accompanied by a escort vehicle or pilot car if:

Length: If load is over 98′ on 2 lanes 1 rear pilot car (escort) is required.  If over 118′ in length 1 front and 2 rear pilot car (escort vehicle) is required.
Width: If a load goes beyond the center line of the road then 1 front escort is required.  If over 16′ 4″ wide you will be required to have 1 front and 1 rear escort.
Height: Up to the permit office depending on route.  If over 17′ 2″ in height you will be required to have a bucket truck travel with you.
Weight: For over weight shipments it looks like an escort vehicle will not be required.
Overhang: Case by case basis.  Contact permit office for clarification.

Pilot car and escort vehicle requirements.

Pilot car or escort vehicle mandatory operator certifications and vehicle requirements:

All pilot cars/escort vehicles must display a bumper or roof mounted “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign visible from both the front and rear of the vehicle. Sign must be at least 5′ long and 12″ in height, yellow in color with black letters no less than 10″ tall and 1 1/2″ in width. Vehicle must have 2 safety flags red or orange in color and be a minimum of 18″ of length and/or height mounted at a 40 to 70 degree angle on all 4 corners of the vehicle. Company identification signs must be placed on both sides of the pilot car (escort vehicle) displaying the name of the company, phone number and be placed on both the left and right hand sides of the vehicle. These signs must be no less that 8″ tall x 12″ wide and identity writing must be plainly legible. Vehicle must be equipped with a horizontally mounted rotating (or strobe) amber colored flashing light which must be visible from a 360 degree angle from a minimum of 500 feet. Vehicles must be equipped with a CB radio or 2-way communication device, 2 – 5 pound fire extinguishers type A, B and C, a sign with the word “STOP” on one side and “SLOW” on the other with dimensions of no less than 18″ in diameter with a minimum of 6″ letters. A red safety colored flag with handle no less than 18″ square, 3 reflective emergency road triangles or 18″ traffic cones, 2 OVERSIZE LOAD banners (yellow with black lettering) and a safety colored (red, orange, yellow or lime green) vest, jacket or shirt (used while directing traffic).

Florida DOT legal load sizes and weight limitations:

Length: 75 feet overall. 48 feet semi-trailer. A 53 feet semi-trailer must have kingpin set 41 feet from the kingpin to the center of rear axle.
Width: 8 feet 6 inches (only 8 feet on some un-designated highways).
Height: 13 feet 6 inches (only 13 feet on some un-designated highways).
Weight: 80,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW). 22,000 pounds on a single axle, 44,000 pounds on tandem axles and 66,000 pounds on tridem axles.
Overhang: 3 feet from the front or 3 feet from the rear of trailer maximum.

Weight: Tandem 44,000 pounds,  Tridem 69,000 pounds, quadem axles must have a minimum of 10 feet between groupings. 5 axles 112,000 pounds, 6 axles 122,000 pounds, 7 axles 142,000 pounds, 8 axles 160,000 pounds, 9 axles 195,000 pounds, 10 axles 197,000 pounds, 11 axles 199,000 pounds. You may be able to add an additional 1,000 pounds (up to 5,000) to each additional foot of outerbridge but this does not apply to all configurations. Heavy haul loads that are over a GVW of 160,000 (overall) or less must have a minimum of 10 feet between groupings as mentioned above.
Overehang: No set limitation on overhang. All shipments with overhang are looked at individually.

Travel times and restrictions.

Permitted travel times withing the state of Florida:

Travel is permitted 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 after sunset.  Travel permitted on Saturday (possibly on Sunday) is permitted 1/2 hour before sunrise only until 12 noon if under 14 feet wide and under 14 feet 6 inches tall but you must request “weekend travel” when applying for your permit. Weekend travel is not permitted on New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving or Christmas. Days before and after these holiday days may be restricted as well especially when 4 or 3 day weekends are observed. Heavy haul shipments that do not require escorts or pilot cars may travel continuously. Military shipments (MOBCON)will fall under different guidelines as noted on the permit. Be sure to clarify any discrepancies with the permit office before moving. Always follow the instructions on your permit.

Do I need a pilot car or escort vehicle with my shipment?

Length: If shipment is over 95 feet long 1 rear pilot car is required. If you have in excess of 20 feet of overhang see below.
Width: If over 12 feet wide you will be required to have 1 pilot car or escort vehicle. Some routes may require 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles. If shipment is in excess of 14 feet wide 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles will be required. If shipment is in excess of 15 feet you may be required to have a police escort in addition to a minimum of 2 pilot cars of escort vehicles.
Height: If shipment is in excess of 14 feet and 6 inches you will be required to have one escort vehicle. Over 16 feet in height needs two pilot cars or escort vehicles. Any shipment in excess of 15 feet in height will be required to have a written route survey.
Overhang: Rear overhang up to 20 feet past the center of the rear axle (or dolly) may require 1 pilot car or escort vehicle.

Pilot car certification programs that are accepted within the state of Florida are the following: Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin. A “escort vehicle” or “pilot car” must be a vehicle weighing more than 2,000 pounds with a gross vehicle rating of less than 26,000 pounds. The operator of the vehicle must be certified by the state of Florida or one of the above mentioned states.

Trucking weight limitations.

Single axle: 31,000 lbs. per axle.
Tandem axles: 31,000 lbs. per axle.
Triple axles: 31,000 lbs. per axle.
Quad axles: 313,000 lbs. per axle.
Maximum weights are considered on a case by case basis. They will determine if you are eligible (considering proposed routing) at the time you apply for your permit. No single axle will be permitted to exceed 31,000 lbs.

Truck length limitations:

If you propose to move any shipment with a length that is in excess of 56 feet, you may be required to travel during night time hours only. Again, this is considered on a case by case basis. Any load that exceeds 80′ (feet) will be required to have a front (lead) pilot car (escort vehicle).

Truck width limitations:

Maximum width for legal travel is 8′ 6″. Anything in excess of 8’6″ (inches) in width will be decided on a case by case basis (considering proposed routing). Shipments that are in excess of 12′ (feet) in width will be required to have a lead pilot car vehicle.

Truck height limitations:

Truck height limitations are determined by the overhead clearance of any obstructions that may exists (or are proposed; temp, construction, etc) in the routing proposition you propose. Planning a route that gives you a minimum of a 6″ (inch) clearance is suggested. Any shipment that is in excess of 13′ 6″ (feet/inches) will be required to have a pilot car (escort vehicle) equipped with a height pole

Truck overhang limitations:

If overhang is in excess of 10′ (feet) from the rear of the trailer you will be required to have a lead vehicle as well as a chase.

Truck signs and flag requirements:

Shipments that are in excess of 8′ 6″ (feet/inches) are required to have “wideload” signs affixed to the front and rear of the truck and trailer. No flags are “required”. There are no sign size/letter specifications in the Washington D.C. laws but note they should be professionally printed signs.

Notes:

If you are in a situation where you have excess (extreme) widths and/or heights you will more than likely be required to travel during night time hours.

Pilot car (escort) vehicle requirements (PiloTrac):

No particular type of vehicle is specified in Washington D.C. laws. However, we do suggest a minimum wheel base of 72 inches. Pilot cars (escort vehicles) will be required to have a amber flashing (rotating) light mounted on the very top of the vehicle. We would suggest pilot cars have the minimum requirements by other states such as: slow/stop paddle, professional wide, oversize, long load signs, company name, address and phone on the side of vehicle, flares, safety vest, CB radio and a height pole if the shipment you intend on escorting is in excess of 13′ 11″.

Travel times and restrictions:

Travel is permitted 24 hours a day unless you are in the extreme excess as noted above in height, width and length. Shipments that are wideloads or overheight or over length may be restricted to travel between 10 pm and 5 am. If so you will not be permitted to travel from 7am til 9:30 am and 4 pm til 6:30 pm. During extreme weather conditions travel may be restricted. Weekend travel is allowed as well as weekends. The Washington D.C. permitting office will be closed on the following holidays: New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Lincoln’s Birthday, Washington’s Birthday, Goof Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day.

Ontario shipping regulations

These are the Province of Ontario DOT shipping regulations, limitations, rules and laws for the trucking of oversize and over weight loads over the roads and highways in the Province of Ontario.

The oversize rules, laws and regulations for Canada consist of a lot of pages and a lot of information on all of these pages. We’ve been working on consolidating all os this information in order to supply the best of it to our web viewers but as you can see it still needs work. Maximum width:

Vehicle including load – 2.6 m

Exceptions:
Raw forest products (en route) – 2.8 m
Road service vehicles as defined in Part X of the HTA and such vehicles while they are travelling to and from a maintenance site or repair centre – no specified limit

Definition of semi-trailer: A vehicle that is towed by another vehicle and is so designed and used that a substantial part of its weight and load rests on, or is carried by, the other vehicle or a trailer converter dolly through a fifth wheel assembly.
Note: Does not include any extension in length caused by auxiliary equipment or machinery not designed for carrying a load.
Maximum Length (Combination):

Combination vehicles and loads – 23 m

Maximum Height:

Vehicle and load – 4.15 m

Maximum Weight:

Maximum shipping weight allowances are determined using axle configurations and spacings. A permit is required if the axle and/or gross vehicle weight exceeds the limits set out in the HTA.  See e-Laws: Highway Traffic Act Regulation 413/05 – Vehicle Weights and Dimensions — for safe, productive and infrastructure-friendly vehicles.

Farm equipment shipping rules and regulations in Ontario Canada:

Over dimensional farming tractors, harvesters, planters, machinery  machinery, farm tractors, self-propelled implements of husbandry (SPIH) carried on a plated motor vehicle or plated trailer drawn by a motor vehicle are subject to the need for an over dimensional permit.
When an Overweight Permit is Required
The province of Ontario issues permits for overweight vehicles and/or loads when the dimensions and/or weight exceed the limits set out in the Highway Traffic Act.
Permits are issued for indivisible vehicles and/or loads when, if separated into smaller loads or vehicles, would:
Compromise the intended use of the vehicle or load, i.e. make it unable to perform the function for which it was intended,
Destroy the value of the load or vehicle, i.e. make it unusable for its intended purposes or,
Require more than 8 (eight) work hours to dismantle using appropriate resources and equipment.
Permit is issued for the movement of overheight however:

The load must not be made up of articles loaded or mounted one on top of the other in a manner that will create additional height.
Permit is issued for the movement of overwidth however:

The load must not be made up of articles loaded or mounted side by side or crosswise in a manner that will create additional width.
Permit is issued for the movement of overlength however:

The load must not be made up of articles loaded or mounted one behind the other that will create additional length, and any overhang to the rear must not exceed 4.65 m from the center of the rearmost axle.
Permit is issued for the movement of overweight however:

The load must not be made up of more than one article. When crossing bridges, vehicles over 45,000 kg gross weight must be operated at the lowest practicable speed. Bridge postings and load restrictions pursuant to Part VII of the HTA apply.

Bulldozers: An exception may be made in the case of bulldozer blades. Permits are issued for the movement of bulldozers with blades attached up to, and including, 4.27 m in width. The blade must be angled to reduce the overall width of the load when attached to the bulldozer. The blade must be removed when the blade is greater than 4.27 m in width. Bulldozers with blades attached that are 4 m to 4.27 m in width require a private escort warning vehicle.

Permit Application Process
Application forms must be completed in full and may be submitted by fax, e-mail, mail or in person at an Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Permit Issuing Office.
Permit application forms and guidelines for completing the application are available on the ministry website. You can also visit an Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO) Permit Issuing Office.
Incomplete applications will be returned.
Prior to obtaining an overdimensional permit, there may be other requirements that must be met in order to travel in Ontario, e.g. CVOR, National Safety Code (NSC), etc. Contact MTO at 416-246-7166 ext 6302 or 1-800-387-7736 ext 6302 (Ontario only) to find out about the requirements for operating in Ontario.
It is the operator’s responsibility to comply with registration, fuel tax, and other federal and provincial/state regulations and procedures.

Superloads or extreme moves: It is possible that Ontario may require that a bond, or other security, sufficient to cover the cost of repairing possible damage to the highway be posted before issuing the permit.
A permit grants the movement of overweight loads on highways under provincial jurisdiction. Municipalities may accept ministry permits or issue their own for highways under their jurisdiction. The carrier must contact the appropriate municipalities to ensure compliance with local laws.

Types of Permits:
The ministry issues four types of permits; Annual, Project, Single Trip and Special Vehicle Configuration. Each overweight permit will have specific conditions attached and these must be strictly adhered to. The permit may be terminated for breach of any condition and the permit holder may be subject to prosecution.

Permits must be carried and produced on demand by a police officer or an officer appointed for carrying out the provisions of the Highway Traffic Act. Permit holders accept responsibility for any and all damage that may be caused to overhead wires, structures, highways, encroachments or railway right of ways. Permits may be terminated at the discretion of the Registrar of Motor Vehicles for the breach of permit conditions.
If travel on Highway 407/ETR is planned, you must supply the transponder serial number and plate number(s) of the vehicle(s) planning to travel on Highway 407/ETR. When applying for a single trip or project permit, you must indicate the specific entry and exit points from Hwy 407/ETR when specifying your route. Annual permit holders are permitted to travel on Hwy 407/ETR provided that the carrier complies with the requirement for a transponder. For more information on Highway 407/ETR visit their website.

Annual Permits

An annual permit is valid for 12 months from the date of issue on all King’s highways. The annual permit also allows travel on Highway 407 ETR provided that the commercial vehicle has a valid transponder. The maximum dimensions permitted on an annual permit are as follows:
Single vehicle:
length 12.50 m, including a maximum rear overhang of 4.65 m
weight as per the Highway Traffic Act
Combination vehicles:
length 25 m, including a maximum rear overhang of 4.65 m
to obtain overweight privileges up to 63,500 kg, contact an MTO office
Note: rear overhang may be greater than 4.65 m with the Weight & Load Engineer’s approval.
Width: 3.70 m on two lane highways and 3.85 m on multi-lane highways (standard for both single and combination vehicles)
Height: 4.26 m (standard for both single and combination vehicles)

Annual permit applications are normally processed within 10 to 15 business days of receipt. In order to avoid delays in obtaining an annual permit, please ensure the permit request is submitted a minimum of 30 days prior to the requested start date of the permit.

Project Permits

A project permit is issued to allow contractors to move similar loads, objects and structures over the same specified route for a period of up to, and including 6 months, depending on the duration of the contract.
Applicants for project permits must attach a copy of the contract to the application. The letter of contract must be written on company letterhead and include the following information:

  • Name and address of the carrier
  • Contract number (if available)
  • Duration of the contract
  • Description of the product being transported
  • Origin of load and destination with complete route specified including municipal roads

Once all required documentation has been received, traffic and construction concerns will be assessed prior to the approval and issuance of a permit.
The weights and dimensions provided must be load specific. Therefore, the weights and dimensions specified on the actual permit are those of the load and not the maximum allowable limit. The maximum dimensions permitted on a project permit are as follows:
Combination vehicles:
length up to 36.75 m including a 4.65 m rear overhang, no height limit provided that the load is on a float type trailer (heights of 4.30 m or greater require a route clearance), and height up to 70,000 kg

Single vehicle:
Length: 12.50 m, including a 4.65 m rear overhang
Height: up to 4.26 m
Weight: as per the Highway Traffic Act
Width: up to 4.30 m (standard for both single and combination vehicles).
Note: escort vehicles may be required
Single Trip Permits

A single trip permit is issued to facilitate an overweight move for a one way trip along a specified route for a limited time period. Some applications may require review by the Permit Issuing Office (Head Office) in St. Catharines.
The following dimensions are permitted on single trip permits:
Length: combination vehicles from 23 m to 45.75 m
over 45.75 m (must be submitted to the St Catharines Permit Issuing Office)
single vehicle 12.50 m
Width: from 2.61 m to 5 m (any permit office)
over 5.00 m (must be submitted to the St Catharines Permit Issuing Office)
Height: 4.16 m or greater
maximum height permitted on a flatbed trailer is 4.26 m
Weight: up to 120,000 kg subject to Weight & Load Engineer’s approval
Single vehicle: maximum length is 12.50 m, including an overhang up to 4.65 m
maximum height is 4.26 m
Metric Conversion: Ontario measurement standards are in metric. To convert imperial measurement to metric:
Convert measurement to inches and multiply by 0.0254, e.g.,
9’6″ = (9′ x 12) + 6″
= 108″ + 6″
= 114″
114″ x 0.0254 = 2.89 metres
Convert weight from pounds to kilograms, divide pounds by 2.205,e.g., 154,000 lbs ÷ 2.205 = 69,841 kgs
When applying for a single trip permit, a carrier should apply at a minimum of 24 hours prior to the proposed move date but MTO suggests applying 2 to 3 days prior to the move to allow the Permit Issuing Office sufficient time to process the permit request.
When applying for a permit with exceptional dimensions over 5 m in width, and/or 45.75 m or greater in length, and/or over 120,000 kg, a carrier should submit their application to St. Catharines Permit Issuing Office at least 5 days prior to the proposed move date due to the more involved approval process. The approval process requires a minimum of 72 hours and may take up to 14 days prior to processing.
Loads that are in excess of 120,000 kg, gross vehicle weight, and/or 6 metres in width intending to travel on two lane highways or 7 metres in width if traveling on multilane highways, and/or 45.75 metres in length, are considered to be “superloads”. “Superloads” are not considered to be routine applications and will require additional time for consideration and processing. Applications for “superloads” will require supplementary documentation and be subject to a thorough review by the Ministry of Transportation’s Weight and Load Engineer as well as various senior Ministry management personnel as circumstances may warrant.
Documentation must clearly demonstrate the requirement to make the intended move on the province’s highways; this is done through a Project Justification. The Project Justification would normally include, but is not limited to the following:
Alternate means of transportation (e.g. rail, water, or possibly air) must have been thoroughly investigated and documentation outlining why these methods are not being pursued is to be provided.
Detailed description of the load including engineering drawing where applicable – illustrating the construction of the item and indicating why the item cannot be reduced down in size or weight.
Detailed description of the project the item is intended for, including – construction schedule, consequences of late delivery, economic benefits associated with the project.
Based on the Project Justification documents submitted, the ministry will consider the necessity of permitting the move. Upon satisfactory justification of the project, the applicant will need to provide:
For gross vehicle weights in excess of 120,000 kg, the Ministry of Transportation requires the applicant to hire a designated consultant engineer to evaluate the bridges on route, and submit the evaluation for approval. A list of approved bridge consulting engineers is available from the MTO, St Catharines Permit Issuing Office.
A Traffic Management Plan defining in detail all aspects of the intended move, including:
Detailed escort requirement and procedures identifying the responsibility of all units involved (OPP and private).
Detailed route survey indicating all appropriate locations for road closures, pull-over areas, emergency parking, fuel stops, significant turning movements and any anticipated roadside related activities such as restricting roadside parking.
Contingency plans for breakdowns.
Municipalities requiring separate permits.
All documentation will be subjected to review and approval by MTO prior to the issuance of permits. Consideration will only be given to the move if it can be satisfactorily proven to be absolutely necessary.
Special Vehicle Configuration

Special Vehicle Configuration permits are issued for vehicles that vary from the requirements of the HTA and regulations. The purpose of Special Vehicle Configuration permits is to harmonize configurations, weights and dimensions applicable to a class of vehicles with those of any other jurisdiction; to allow for a trial of a vehicle; or to allow for a variance from a limit within a specific geographical area.

Night Moves
Night moves are allowed for all permit types with certain restrictions provided that all conspicuity requirements are met.

Criteria 1:  Overlength/Overwidth

Moves allowed: Night moves are allowed for vehicles and loads up to, and including, 3.05 m wide and 25 m long.
Routes: Night moves are restricted to multi-lane controlled access highways with a median. The lane width on these types of highways is 3.75 m.

Criteria 2:  Overheight/Overweight

Moves allowed: Night moves are allowed for vehicles and loads up to, and including, 4.26 m high and 63,500 kg.
Routes: All King’s highways.

Conditions For Both Criteria

Conspicuity Requirements: Conspicuity requirements must be met during a night move. These requirements consist of the extremities being marked with a solid amber lamp(s) visible in the front and rear, conforming to SAE Code P2 or P3 with markings to appear on the lamp(s), and a retro-reflective “D” sign must be present.
Weather Conditions: Night moves are restricted when inclement weather conditions prevail. Inclement weather is described as the following:
“No travel is allowed when road conditions, weather conditions, or visibility make traveling hazardous to the operator or to the driving public. Conditions shall be deemed to be hazardous upon any accumulation of ice or snow on the roadway or if the continuous use of windshield wipers is required. Vehicles that are underway when inclement weather occurs shall exit the road at the first available location and park in a safe place until the weather and road conditions clear.”

Note: overweight moves are allowed for all permit types on statutory holidays, and the preceding day of a statutory holiday, with restrictions.

Preceding Day:

Preceding day means the day before a statutory holiday restriction. If the statutory holiday is a Saturday, Sunday or Monday, the preceding day is the Friday. If the statutory holiday is on any other day of the week, the preceding day is the day before the holiday.
Moves Allowed

Overweight moves are allowed all day on the preceding day of a statutory holiday for dimensions that do not exceed the following dimensions:
width of 3.70 m on two lane highways and 3.85 m on multi-lane highways
length no greater than 25 m for combination vehicles and 12.50 m for single vehicles
height maximum 4.26 m
weight no greater than 63,500 kg.
Restrictions

Vehicles and/or loads in excess of the dimensions listed above are only allowed to travel between ½ hour before sunrise and noon on the preceding day of a statutory holiday.
Weekend Moves
Weekend moves are allowed for all permit types with certain restrictions on dimensions. Weekend moves also have restrictions during summer months.
Saturdays and Sundays:

Overweight moves are allowed all day Saturday and Sunday for dimensions that do not exceed the following dimensions:
width of 3.70 m on two lane highways and 3.85 m on multi-lane highways

Sunday Restrictions in Summer Months

Sunday travel is not permitted between noon and midnight during the restricted summer months of June, July, August (Southern Ontario) and July and August (Northern Ontario) for any overweight vehicles and/or loads.
Fridays:

Moves Allowed

Over dimensional moves are allowed all day for all dimensions except during summer restrictions.
Friday Restrictions in Summer Months

Travel is not permitted between 3:00 pm and midnight during the restricted summers months of June, July, August (Southern Ontario) and July and August (Northern Ontario) for any overweight vehicles and/or loads.

Exceptions

Travel between 3:00 pm and midnight on Fridays during summer restrictions may be permitted for vehicles and/or loads with heights up to, and including, 4.26 m and overall weight not exceeding 63,500 kg.
Long Wheelbase Tractors

Ontario Regulation 413/05 have reaffirmed Ontario’s preference in restricting the wheelbase of tractor units to the 6.20 meter national standard. The wheelbase dimension is measured from the center of the steer axle to the center of the drive axle group (typically the middle of the drive axles). Carriers specialized in the transportation of overweight (O/O) indivisible loads will frequently operate over length tractors to accommodate additional axles, heavier duty suspensions, and/or sliding fifth wheel assemblies for proper weight distribution. These requirements are generally acknowledged by our Ministry, and these carriers are routinely authorized to operate this fleet of specialized vehicles for routine “permitted” transportation of lighter O/O loads. This accommodation, however, is not intended to inadvertently authorize operation of over length tractors equipped with large sleeper berths or living quarters, frequently utilized in other jurisdictions.
Permit issuing staff have been instructed to verify tractor wheelbase dimensions and should they suspect that a carrier is unnecessarily utilizing an over length tractor, they are to ask for clarification and/or support documentation defining the requirements for the over length tractor. Rationale such as on-board generators are frequently unjustified due to their compact size and abundant availability of portable rental units suitable for most applications. Carriers should expect to provide a photograph of the combination in support of their justification.
Congested Traffic
Vehicles and/or loads travelling under a single trip or project permit are subject to a congested traffic condition when travelling in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
The condition below applies to all single trip and project permits with dimensions that exceed the following dimensions:
width of 3.70 m on single highways, 3.85 m on multi-lane highways
length exceeding 25 m
height exceeding 4.26 m
weight in excess of 63,500 kg.
Condition:

This permit is not valid for vehicles travelling in the directions entering the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) between the hours of 7:00am to 9:30am and vehicles travelling in the directions exiting the GTA between the hours of 3:30pm to 6:30pm in the area described as being west of Thickson Rd (Hwy 401); south of King Road (Hwy 400) or Stouffville Road (Hwy 404); and east of Trafalgar Road (Hwy 401), Hwy 8 (Hwy403) to junction 403/407ETR/QEW (QEW).
This permit is not valid for vehicles travelling in the directions exiting the GTA between the hours of 7:00 to 9:30 am, and vehicles travelling in the directions entering the GTA between the hours of 3:30 to 6:30pm in the area described as being west of Whites Road (Hwy 401); south of King Road (Hwy 400) or Stoufville Road (Hwy 404; and east of Hwy 10 (Hwy 401) or Bronte Road (QEW).

Permit Conditions
Conditions contained on all overweight permits must be strictly adhered to. The permit may be terminated for breach of any condition and the permit holder may be subject to prosecution.
Permits issued are not valid in combination with any other permits issued under Section 110.
Security of Loads

Loads being moved under an overweight permit must be firmly bound, or otherwise secured or loaded, in such a manner that no portion of the load may become dislodged or fall from the motor vehicle or trailer on which they are being transported. Regulation 614 under the HTA governs the security of loads and sets out the requirements for various types of loads.
A carrier may apply for an exemption from Regulation 614 when moving an exceptionally large or heavy piece of equipment.
In order to receive an exemption from Regulation 614, the application form must be completed and submitted along with a letter and diagram indicating in detail why the requirements of Regulation 614 cannot be adhered to. The permit will indicate the exemption if it is granted.
Note: The exemption only applies to the Regulation and not to Section 111(2) of the HTA.
Bonds

MTO may require that a bond, or other security, sufficient to cover the cost of repairing possible damage to the highway, be posted before issuing a permit.
Any of the following circumstances may be sufficient to warrant a bond being posted:
where loading on tires must exceed 11 kg per millimeter width,
where loading on axle must exceed 10,000 kg during reduced load period,
where total gross vehicle weight exceeds 120,000 kg subject to engineering analysis of bridge structures and geo-technical assessment of roadway structure,
where overweight vehicles must be routed over substandard bridge structures subject to engineering analysis of bridge structures, or
deemed to be warranted by the Director of the Carrier Safety and Enforcement Branch.
The value of the bond will be determined by the ministry and is not subject to negotiation. The carrier may be required to pay for the services of ministry approved geo-technical and/or structural consultants to assess conditions and evaluate any damages caused by the move.
Flags, Signs and Lighting

Vehicles and/or loads in excess of HTA legal dimensions require special flags and signs. When travelling at night, conspicuity markings must also be met.
Flags:

Vehicles and/or loads in excess of dimensions prescribed under Section 109 of the Highway Traffic Act shall be marked with bright red or orange warning flags of not less than 40 cm square and shall be mounted to the extremities of the vehicle or load. The flag(s) must be kept in good and clean condition so as to not diminish their effectiveness.
“D” Sign or “Oversize Load”:

In addition to flags described above, vehicles and/or loads must display on the front of the vehicle and the rear of the load, in a clearly visible position, a sign visible for a distance of at least 150 m bearing the words “OVERSIZE LOAD” in black letters at least 200 mm high with lines forming the letters at least 30 mm wide on a yellow background, or a “D” sign as illustrated below. When travelling under night moves, the sign shall be made of Level 1, high intensity retro-reflective material (CGSB 62-GP-11M). The sign shall be positioned as to not obstruct lights and other safety devices and removed or covered when not in use.

Lighting:

Conspicuity requirements must be met during a night move. These requirements are over and above the lighting requirements set out in the HTA and consist of the extremities being marked with a solid amber lamp(s) visible in the front and rear conforming to SAE Code P2 or P3 with markings to appear on lamp(s).
When travelling under a night move, a retro-reflective “D” sign described above must be present.
Escort Requirements

A permit may be issued on the condition that the permit holder provides an escort vehicle(s) either preceding or following the overweight vehicle or load. A description of when an escort vehicle is required is as follows:
No Escort Required:
for widths from 2.61 m to 3.99 m
for lengths from 23.01 m to 36.75 m
for heights from 4.16 m to 4.86 m
When a Private Escort Warning Vehicle is Required:

Maximum widths:
from 4 m to 4.99 m- 1 escort vehicle required on multi-lane highways
from 4 m to 4.59 m – 1 escort vehicle required on two lane highways
from 4.6 m to 4.99 m – 2 escort vehicles required on two lane highways
One private escort warning vehicle is required to accompany the movement of the authorized load. The private escort warning vehicle shall be required to precede the load on two lane highways or follow the load on multi-lane highways.
A second private escort warning vehicle is required to follow the load authorized by this permit while travelling on two lane highways.

Maximum lengths:
from 36.76 m to 45.74 m – 1 escort vehicle required
rear overhang greater than 4.65 m – 1 escort vehicle required at the rear of load

Height:
4.87 m and greater – 1 escort vehicle (pole car) required
Permit holder is responsible for all horizontal and vertical clearances along the route and must ensure that proper clearance(s) exist. A pilot escort vehicle equipped with a height pole 8 cm higher than the load must precede the load to ensure proper vertical clearances and communicate any obstructions to the driver of the permitted vehicle.

Private Escort Warning Vehicle Requirements:

Where a permit is issued on the condition that the permit holder provides a Private Escort Operator, Warning Vehicle and Equipment:
The escort vehicle(s) shall be operated by a fully (unrestricted) licensed driver of not less than 18 years of age with at least two years experience and a valid driver’s licence.
The escort vehicle(s) shall not have more than 2 axles and a wheelbase length of not less than 2.65 metres and shall be equipped with flashing amber warning lamp(s) located on the roof of the escort vehicle. Lighting shall consist of either a rectangular amber bar positioned perpendicular to the length of the escort vehicle or at least one amber warning lamp conforming to standard SAE J845 or J1318 Class 1 or 2. All lights shall be visible on a 360 degree basis from the vehicle. The lenses must be kept in good and clean condition, free from the accumulation of dirt, snow or pit markings, as to not diminish the effectiveness of the lamp.
Either a “D” or an “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign shall be used. [See “D” sign (as illustrated in Figure 1) attached. If using an “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign, the letters shall be in black on a yellow background]. The sign shall be mounted on the front and rear, or on the roof, of the escort vehicle. The sign shall not obstruct warning lights and other safety devices. If mounted on the roof, the sign shall be perpendicular to the length of the escort vehicle and shall be made of durable rigid material and must not interfere with the view of the light bar or warning light and the sign must be printed on both sides of the panel. The sign shall be removed or covered when not in use.
The escort vehicle(s) and towing vehicle(s) shall be equipped with a working two way radio communication device permitting direct communication between the vehicles.
The escort vehicle(s) shall be equipped with a fire extinguisher in effective working order, six 45 cm (18″) traffic cones and/or portable reflectors approved by the MTO, and extra bulbs to maintain all lights required by this schedule.
All units, including the escort vehicle(s), will be operated with headlights on when travelling on a highway and shall maintain a distance of 60 to 150 metres from the load being escorted.
Caution: Escort vehicles do not have traffic control authority. The escort driver must obey all traffic laws and regulations.

When A Minimum of Two Police Escort Vehicles are Required:

Width: 5 m and greater
Length: 45.75 m and greater
Weight: upon Weight and Load Engineer’s request
There may be instances where, due to the parameters of the highway, escort requirements may change. If necessary, the region(s) may require escorts when normally none are required or additional escorts to those already requiring escorts.
If a police escort is required, it is the carrier’s responsibility to make all arrangements for the escort through the Traffic Supervisor at the originating OPP District Headquarters. The OPP normally requires 14 working days to process an application, but there may be exceptions depending on the circumstances. The carrier must provide the date(s) of the move, the proposed route and particulars of the load. The OPP Traffic Supervisor is responsible for co-ordinating the escort for the entire move and will provide the carrier with written approval for the escort. This approval must be provided to the MTO permit issuer prior to a permit being issued.

Mobile/Modular Homes:

(This includes office and construction trailers and portable schoolhouse)
Mobile/modular homes greater than 29.25 m in length are not permitted to travel in convoy and require TWO private escort warning vehicles to accompany each load.
In addition to the above, annual and project permit holders must provide a private escort warning vehicle on the following highways when the load measurement meets or exceeds the listed widths:

Highway 144:
From 20 km north of Highway 17 at Whitson Creek (Chelmsford) to the junction of Highway 144 and Highway 101:
For loads ranging in width between 3.66 and 3.99 metres, two private escort vehicles are required.
For loads ranging in width between 4.00 and 4.56 metres, one OPP escort at the front of the load and one private escort vehicle at rear of the load.
For widths greater than 4.57 metres, two OPP escorts are required, one at the front and one at the rear of the load.
Reduced Load Period:

Annual and project permits for moving heavy vehicles, loads, objects or structures in excess of legal weight limits are not valid on any King’s highway during the months of March and April (Southern Ontario) and March, April and May (Northern Ontario). Weights in excess of legal limits are only allowed when specifically authorized to do so under permit conditions.
For the purposes of this restriction the boundary between Northern and Southern Ontario is considered to be:
The Severn River to Regional Road 169 (formerly Highway 169)
Regional Road 169 from Washago to Highway 12
Highway 12, from Regional Road 169 to Highway 7, north of Sunderland
Highway 7 from Highway 12 to Regional Road 7B (formerly Highway 7B), at Carleton Place
Regional Road 7B to Regional Road 29 (formerly Highway 15), and
Regional Road 29 to Arnprior.
Permits are not valid on designated reduced load highways, which are posted according to Section 122(5) of the HTA, under any circumstances. There are very few reduced load highways under provincial jurisdiction. Schedules detailing highways subject to reduced loads are authorized and issued by the Highway Operations and Maintenance Division.
Single trip permits may be issued for movements on highways subject to reduced loading restrictions. However, the Weight and Load Engineer must approve these moves. Annual permits with special weight condition for specific axle weight configurations have an additional condition for reduced load periods.
Corridor Moves

Oversize and overweight trucking permits may be issued to Canadian or US carriers for movements within or through the province of Ontario under the following conditions:

if the move originates and terminates in Ontario;
if the move originates in Ontario and terminates in another province or territory;
if the move originates in another Canadian province or territory, or one of the states of the United States of America, and terminates in Ontario;
if the move originates in another Canadian province or territory and terminates in another/same Canadian province and/or territory, or one of the states of the United States of America, where Ontario is to be used as a corridor.
if the move originates in one of the states of the United States of America and terminates in another Canadian province or territory, where Ontario is to be used as a corridor.
if the move is a mobile home that originates and terminates in the United States of America, Ontario may be used as a corridor.
Note: Canadian or US operators, including Ontario operators, are not permitted to use Ontario as a corridor for state-to-state moves, except for MOBILE HOMES.
Ontario registration requirements must be met and the operator must be in possession of a valid operating authority.
No Convoy Moves

Convoy moves are not permitted. Each load must be separated by at least 45 minutes. When en route, a minimum spacing of 10km is required.
Clearance in Construction Zones

Annual and project permit holders may encounter construction zones where the horizontal clearance has been reduced to less than 3.70m or vertical clearance has been reduced to less than 4.26m. Before traveling through any construction zone, the permit holder is responsible for verifying clearances. Road construction reports can be obtained by visiting Traveller’s Information on the Ministry of Transportation website. Road information can also be obtained by calling the Ministry of Transportation Inquiry Centre at 1-800-268-4686. Cellular users can dial *ROAD or (416)235-1110 and listen to a recorded message will that provides daily updates of provincial construction projects and other pertinent information.

Legal load limits.
Legal load sizes and weights:

Length: 60′ is the overall maximum length allowed without a permit.
Width: 8′ 6″ in the maximum legal width allowed to travel on state roads.
Height: 13′ 6″ is the maximum legal height allowed to travel without a permit.
Weight: 80,000 lbs maximum GVW is the maximum weight permitted to travel without a permit.
Overhang: 3′ in the front and 6′ in the rear is the maximum permitted overhang for legal travel.

Routine trucking permits.
Trucking permits for overweight and oversize loads that are handled on a daily basis:

Length: 125′ in length pretty much is the maximum for routing permits. 100′ in length is the maximum on mobile homes. Overhang see; escort requirements below but the maximum is about 15′ in length.
Width: 16′ in width is the maximum allowed on a routine permit. Over this width depending on routing and you may become a superload.
Height: 16′ in height is about the maximum. Anything over 16′ in height and you start to run into trouble. Any shipment that is over 16′ in height will be required to have a route survey done prior to getting a permit issued. Also your routing requires that the overall height of your shipment is a minimum of 6″ less that any obstructions on the route in order to get that route approved routinely.
Weight: Single axle maximum weight: 20,000 lbs, tandem axle maximum weight is 40,000 lbs, tridum axle maximum weight is 50,000 lbs, quadem axle maximum weight is 70,000 lbs, 5 axle maximum weight is 90,000 lbs, 6 axle maximum weight is 110,000 lbs, 7 axle maximum weight is 130,000 lbs. Anything over 130,000 lbs in weight is a superload and will need to have a bridge analysis done. See superload section below.
Overhang: 3′ in the front and 15′ of rear overhang is about all you are going to get. You can call for more information but expect trouble.
Notes: South Carolina DOT is pretty tough on shipments that exceed any of these weight/dimensions. So if you are a boat shipper you’d better figure out a way to cut that fly-bridge off, sorry and don’t shoot the messenger.

Superload information.
We have the following information available on superloads:

As far as length goes you can get some play as long as your routing keeps you away from historic areas. Width is the same thing with traffic density and population considered. Height is big trouble with the South Carolina DOT. You will be required to have a pilot car with you at all times if you are over 16′ in height for sure. Count on a full route survey for shipments over the 16′ in height and remember that they are NOT going to want to let you travel ANY route where the clearance is less than the required 6″ overage in height. So if you are 18′ in height then the obstruction on the proposed route needs to be a minimum of 18′ 6″ in height or you are going to have delays in getting your permit. Weight is a serious issue if you want to cross over ANY bridges so if your shipment is over 130,000 lbs in overall gross weight get ready for bridge studies and time delays. Our suggestion: examine routing alternatives. Overhang is a rare issue but when it comes up and you are wanting to overhang in excess of 15′ you are going to have trouble. This is the case anytime you want to exceed the basic rule which is more than 1/3 of the overall shipment length; you just don’t do it as it’s too dangerous and the South Carolina DOT knows it.

Permitted travel times and restrictions.
Permitted travel times and restrictions:

The 1 half hour after sunrise and 1 half hour before sunset rule applies. Travel is permitted Monday through Saturday with no travel permitted on Sundays. It is possible to get Sunday travel approved but the basic rule is “no travel on Sundays“. If you are allowed to travel on a Sunday it will be clearly stated on your travel permit.  You may not travel on the following holidays: New Years day, Independence day, Labor day, Memorial day, Thanksgiving day and Christmas day. You may not travel past 12 noon on the day previous of the holiday day and until after 12 noon on the day after the holiday. In high traffic density areas you are not allowed to travel from 7 AM -9 Am and 3 PM – 6PM if you are in excess of 14′ in width. If you are 16′ in width or over, on Saturdays you are only permitted to travel between the hours of 9 AM and 3 PM with no travel before or after permitted in any locations.

When pilot cars are required.
A pilot car (escort vehicle) is required when:

Length: Length is tricky in South Carolina, call the DOT to make sure. Leave your comments below for others please.
Width: From 12′ to 14′ in width will require 1 front pilot car (escort vehicle) on 2 lane roads. 14′ to 16′ in width will require 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort vehicle) on all roads in the state. If your shipment is over 16′ in width you will be required to have 3 pilot cars (escort vehicles) 1 front, 1 rear and 1 police escort in the rear.
Height: It all depends on your routing. You could be required to have a pilot car (escort vehicle) with a height pole the entire trip if you are 13′ 7″  (seriously). Please share your expertise with others below.
Weight: If you are approved for weight and able to maintain the minimum speed requirements the South Carolina DOT permit office will probably not require you to have a pilot car (escort vehicle).
Overhang: If your pulling a 48′ or a 53′ (just to clarify) long trailer and you have less than 15′ of overhang you can probably get away with flagging or amber lighting your shipment instead of a rear pilot car (escort vehicle). Anything over the 15′ mark and forget it you will be required to have a pilot car (escort vehicle).

The South Carolina DOT is pretty relaxed on pilot cars. You are required to have the proper banner/sign stating “OVERSIZE LOAD” or “WIDELOAD” displayed either prominently on the top of the vehicle or on the front of lead vehicles or rear of chase vehicles. You must have a flashing or strobing amber light on the top of the vehicle that is visible from 360 degrees from a distance of no less than 500′. You are required to have a CB radio or 2 way communication device and be in communication with all drivers working on your shipment. You are required to have your headlights turned on while working.

Note: It is only our professional opinion that pilot cars also have a minimum of the additional items but not required:  2 – 5 pound fire extinguishers type A, B and C, a paddle sign with the word “STOP” on one side and “SLOW” on the other with dimensions of no less than 18″ in diameter with a minimum of 6″ letters. A red safety colored flag with a handle no less than 18″ square, 3 reflective emergency road triangles or 18″ traffic cones, 8 burning road flares, 2 OVERSIZE LOAD banners (yellow with black lettering) and a safety colored (red, orange, yellow or lime green) vest, jacket or shirt (used while directing traffic).

Amber lights: you are required to have 1 rotating or strobing rear amber light on any vehicle that is  shipping a load in excess of 12′ in width. Flags in safety colored orange or red with a minimum length in any direction of 12″ must be mounted on the 4 outer most corners of the entire overall shipment. Banner signs stating “OVERSIZE LOAD” OR “WIDELOAD” must be placed on the rear and front of the overall shipment. Banner signs must have a letter height of no less than 12′ and have a letter thickness of no less than 1 1/2″. Banner signs must have a yellow background with black lettering.

These maximum dimensions/weights are considered routine oversize or heavy-haul trucking permits in Minnesota:

Length:  Combinations overall length over 75 feet requires a permit. Single vehicles that exceed 45 feet require a permit. Anything under 130 feet long is considered routine.
Weight:  Single axle 20,000 pounds, 40,000 pounds on tandem axles (46,000 pounds with a bridge check), tridem axles 60,000 pounds, quadem axles 72,000 pounds,  trunion axles 60,000 pounds. Gross weights: 5 axles 92,000 pounds, 6 axles 112,000 pounds, 7 axles 132,000 pounds, 8 axles 144,000 pounds. Over 150,000 pounds is a superload.
Width: Figure up to 14 feet to 16 feet as a routine permit. Anything over 16 feet wide man have routing issues and require a route survey.
Height: Over 13 feet and 6 inches requires a permit. Up to 14 feet is easy, then at 15 feet and 6 inches route restrictions start to apply. If over 15 feet and 6 inches you have the pleasure of paying for a route survey unless it’s an easy short run then you may wiggle out of it.
Notes: Farm equipment operating at less than 30 miles per hour may be exempt. Utility poles may be exempt. Heavy-haul loads have to deal with frost laws. Visibility from inclement weather can side-line you as well.

What constitutes a superload in Nebraska:

Superloads in the state of Nebraska are defined as any shipment in excess of the above weights or dimensions described above in “routine”.  Also see: Laws for Minnesota state oversize and heavy-haul.

Legal travel times for oversize and heavy-haul loads.

Travel times and restrictions for heavy-haul and oversize loads:

Travel times are primarily from 2 AM until 10 PM except for holidays.  Some areas have rush hour restrictions 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM so check your permit as any applicable restrictions will be listed on it. For heavy-haul loads there are spring restrictions that start usually late in February and usually end and the end of May. Night time travel is simply defined as local times of sunrise and sunset. The state of Minnesota observe Central standard Time.

Lights, safety flags and warning signs for heavy haul and oversize loads.

Required marking, safety flags, warning signs for heavy haul and oversize loads:

Signs: Oversize load signs will need to meet the following requirements: be constructed of a rigid material or mounted on a flat surface that ensures the sign will remain flat and clearly legible to all approaching traffic. Warning signs must be a minimum size of 18 inches tall and 84 inches wide. The background of all signs must be yellow in color with the letters OVERSIZE LOAD”printed on them with a clear font that is no less than 10 inches tall and 1 and 3/8ths of an inch thick and black in color. The sign panel shall be lighted when ever use during night time transport. Whenever lighting a sign it must be an a manner that illuminates it well enough to be seen from a distance of no less than 500 feet. Any oversize load that is in excess of 12 feet wide requires oversize load signs. Oversize load signs are required on all vehicles and shipments that exceed 95 feet in length. All signs will need to be legible, clean and in good condition whenever used. The appropriate and applicable sign will need to be mounted on the roof of the escort vehicle (not on the bumpers) whenever a escort vehicle or pilot car is required. Oversize load signs will need to be mounted on the cab of the truck that is towing the shipment and on the rear of the trailer that is hauling the shipment and installed no less than 5 feet above the pavement. Signs will need to be displayed when escorting or moving a oversize load. The oversize load sign shall be required on any oversized loads with multiple dimensions. “WIDELOAD” and “LONG LOAD)” signs must be used on escort vehicles, whichever is applicable. Signs will not be permitted to extend beyond the width of the fenders of the vehicle more than 6 inches to the left or the right of pilot car vehicles. The Minnesota DOT may even require additional signs if they determine that it is necessary.
Flags: Flags are required to be used on any projection(s) that extend more than 3 feet beyond the front bumper or 4 feet beyond the rear of the truck bed of any semi-trucks or when any loads exceeds 9 feet wide and or 65 feet long. Flags must be either safety fluorescent red, yellow or orange and be no less than 18 inches square. They must be securely attached to all extremities of overhang whether on the front the rear and at the corners at the widest point so they are clearly visible to approaching motorists.
Warning lights: warning lights are required when traveling during night hours and must be visible from a distance of no less than 500 feet on a clear day. Simultaneously flashing warning lights will need to be spaced as far apart from each other as possible and are required on the front and rear of the shipment and have a flash rate somewhere between 60 and 90 flashes permit. Lenses on all warning lights must be a minimum of 4 inches in diameter or have a minimum lense surface area of 12 and 1/2 inches. Instead of a pair of warning lights that flash simultaneously either one or more strobe lights or rotating lights may be permitted.

When pilot cars or escort vehicles are required.

Heavy-haul or oversize loads may be required to be accompanies by a escort vehicle or pilot car if:

Length: 95 feet to 110 feet 1 pilot car or escort vehicle on the rear. Over 110 feet requires 1 front escort and 1 chase pilot car.
Width: Loads over 12 feet and 6 inches most of state roads requires one (but not all), 14 feet and 6 inches to 16 feet require 1 front pilot car and 1 rear escort on non-divided highways but only 1 rear on divided highways.  Over 16 feet wide and they will require 1 lead pilot car and a Police/LPA on the rear. On less than 4 lane roads 1 front pilot car is required and on 4 lanes 1 rear escort is required.  Up to 15 feet wide at which point a second escort is required. 18 feet or wider requires a police escort.
Height: If over 14 feet and 6 inches in height you may be required to have a high pole depending on route..
Note: Permits will state on them if they are valid for either 3 or 5 days.

Pilot cars/escort vehicle certifications and requirements.

Pilot car or escort vehicle mandatory operator certifications and vehicle requirements:

The state of Minnesota has two different types of pilot cars/escorts.

“Civilian” escorts/pilot cars and “Peace Officer” escorts/pilot cars. Let’s learn about the two types first.

Civilian escorts/pilot cars: A civilian escort is an individual with a valid drivers license and a valid certification from Minnesota state DOT which has reciprocal agreement (MVCSHTO) with the following states: Colorado, Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Utah and Washington state. Operators must be a minimum of 18 years old and in a properly equipped automobile or pickup truck. This agreement allows other civilian escorts (pilot car operators) certified in participating states to operate in each other.
Peace officer escorts: A peace officer escort is a Minnesota state licensed peace officer using a state authorized emergency vehicle displaying red and/or blue lights. A peace officer escort is the only type of escort permitted that has the ability to require on-coming traffic to yield to the right of way whenever an oncoming wide load encroaches over a 2 lane road center-line. A peace officer escort or pilot car will be required whenever a loaded trucks width extends over the roadway center-line and into on-coming traffic or whenever a loaded truck dimensions require the truck to travel in the wrong lane of the roadway. The Minnesota DOT has determined if extreme hazards exist a peace officer escort or pilot car is the most reasonable solution to maintain road safety for motorists. The carrier must arrange for peace officer escorts or pilot cars whenever they are required whether it is specified on the permit or not. Any time a shipment may potentially cross over the center-line a peace officer escort or pilot car is required.
Civilian escorts/pilot cars continued: Pilot car and escort vehicles can be either a pickup truck, SUV, van, or a passenger vehicle that is in good operating condition and is properly equipped. The driver of a pilot car or escort vehicle must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a valid drivers license. No pilot car or escort vehicle is permitted to tow any type of trailer or other vehicle when operating in the capacity of a escort or pilot car driver. A pilot car or escort vehicle operator is not permitted to perform any other duties other than operating the vehicle. If a rear steer is needed or a remote is being utilized the operator of the pilot car or escort vehicle is not permitted to take part in any of these operations. All escort vehicles and pilot cars are required to be equipped with a wide load or long load sign that shall be displayed on the top of the vehicle. This sign must be clean clear and visible to all traffic. Rotating strobe being or flashing amber lights are required to be installed in the center of the roof of the vehicle and not be obstructed by any other signage. Multiple lights may be used provided they are not obstructed by anything and should be placed on the far right and left hand sides of the upper portion of the vehicle. A pilot car operating in the capacity of a lead vehicle will need to proceed the shipment by a minimum distance of 300 feet and no more than 700 feet. Rear escort vehicles or chase vehicles must follow the shipment at a close safe distance that clearly identifies it as part of the escorted shipment. Convoys are not permitted unless specifically authorized by the Minnesota state DOT.

Legal Loads.
Length:  65’ overall length maximum.
Width: 8’6” on interstate and other designated highways, 8’ on non-designated highways.

Superload information:

Length: Any load that is longer than 145′ is considered a superload.
Width: Any load that is in excess of 14′ 6″ in width is considered a superload.
Height: Any load that is in excess of 15′ 6″ in height is considered a superload.
Weight: Any load that exceeds 120,000 lbs on any standard axle configuration whether it’s a 6,7 or 8 axle configuration or not is considered a superload.
Overhang: Contact them as this varies depending on route.
Notes: Spacing between steer and first tandem must be more than 8′ 1″. The spacing before the first axle and the trailer must not exceed 18′ 6″.  All axle spacings combined must not be less than 43′ 6″. Superload permit processing times vary. Expect delays. Before requesting a route you are expected to do as much research on your own as possible. They will refer you to: GettingAroundIllinois for construction zones and other closures. 

Permitted travel times and restrictions in Illinois:
Illinois travel times and restrictions for oversize loads.

Travel is permitted from ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset  Monday thru Friday and ½ hour before sunrise until 12PM on Saturdays. Loads that are overweight only may travel 24/7 on all days of the week (make certain it is not documented otherwise on your permit before doing so). No travel is permitted on Sundays unless you are below the routine permit standards of no more than 115′ in length, 12′ in width, 13′ 6″ in height (sunrise to sunset rules apply).  No movement is permitted on the major holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, Independence day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Travel stops at 12PM on the day before any of these holidays. The Illinois oversize load permit office is closed on MLK Day, Lincolns birthday, Washingtons birthday, Columbus Day, Election Day, Veterans Day and on the day after Thanksgiving. However, travel is not restricted on these days. Always refer to your permit for approved travel times.

Required shipment, truck and trailer markings:
Truck, trailer and shipment required signs, banners and flags.

A rotating amber light must remain on at all times mounted on top of the cab and be visible from 360 degrees from a minimum of 500′ in direct sunlight. If your overall length is more than 80′ in length you are required to have one amber light over the cab of the truck and one amber light no more than 10′ from the rear of end or trailer/load at the highest point that is practicle. Oversize load signs must be a minimum of 7′ in width x 18″ in height, have a yellow background color with black lettering no less than 10″ in height x 1″ thick – we have recently heard 12″ tall x 2″ thick so please clarify and comment below if you know which is correct. Flags are required at all 4 corners of the load and front of truck and are to be safety red in color and no less than 18″ square. Shipments over 75′ in length, 10′ in width or 14′ 6″ in height are required to have signs. Signs must be placed on the front and rear extremities of the truck, trailer or load.

When pilot cars are required:

Length: If over 110′ in length you are required to have a minimum of 1 pilot car and in some places 2 pilot cars (higher traffic density or certain times of year). If over 145′ (150′ in some very rural areas) in length you are required to have 3 pilot cars –  yes 3. If over 175′ in length a police escort will be required.
Width: Up to 14’6” requires 1 pilot/escort vehicle. Over 16’ requires 2 pilot/escort vehicles. Over 18′ in width will require a police escort. 
Height: Up to 14’ 6” 1 pilot/escort vehicle, over 16’ requires 2 pilot/escort vehicles. Over 18′ in height will require a police escort.
Weight: No requirements as long as you can maintain minimum speeds. However on bridge moves that require all other vehicle traffic to be removed will required appropriate number of pilot cars which is a minimum of 2 and possibly 3 with police escort. All areas are different and require evaluation.
Note: If you exceed any two dimensions, then you are required to have an additional pilot car. So if you’re over 14′ 6″ tall and 14′ 6″ wide you would be require to have 2 pilot cars.  

Required pilot car certifications:

Cars, vans or trucks may be used as long as gross weight of pilot car vehicle is rated at no more than 8,000 lbs. Pilot car driver must be 18 years of age minimum with a valid regular drivers license. Pilot cars must have a rotating or flashing amber light mounted on the top of the vehicle (no specs as of time of writing 2014). Must display red flag at all 4 outer most points of the vehicle and have “OVERSIZE LOAD” signs that are a minimum size of 5′ wide x 12″ tall and have black lettering no less than 8″ in height. Must have radio and be in constant communication with the driver transporting the shipment at all times. Must have $500,000 per occurrence combined insurance that covers property and body.
