Oversize Load Limits in Utah

Below are the maximum load sizes in Utah before you need a permit.  Length: 53 feet. Width: 8’ 6 feet. Height: 14 feet. Weight: 80,000 lbs GVW. Overhang: 3′ in the front and 6′ in the rear.

When Are Pilot Cars Required in Utah?

Pilot car and escort vehicle information:

Length: If a shipment is over 110′ long, you will require 1 front and one rear pilot car (escort). Width: If a shipment is over 14′ in the width you will be required to have 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort). Height: It all depends on the proposed routing. If the height of the load exceeds 15′, you will “probably” be required to have a front high pole escort, but not positively. If the height is 17′ you will more than likely be required to have a high pole escort in the front of the load. Call and speak with them directly for clarification. Weight: Check with the Utah port to see if your weight class will require a pilot car/escort. Overhang: No specified limits. This is something they like to see for themselves at the ports. If your load is secure and safe looking but not too long overall and has flags/amber lights, then you may not be required to have a pilot car.

  1. My friend is trying to get some things shipped for his business. It makes sense that he would want to get a professional to help out with that! That seems like a good way to ensure that he follows the laws for the state that he’s in.

    1. That’s great Braden. This is looking pretty spammy but again, thank you for sharing your thoughts and yes you are correct; using a professional is always a wise idea.
