2024 Michigan Winter Frost /spring Thaw Laws and Seasonal Weight Restrictions
Frost/thaw laws usually go into effect by February. Maine Overweight and Oversize Winter Restrictions
Legal axle weight remains unaffected on “All Season Routes” (green or gold on the MDOT Truck Operators Map). Meanwhile, on “Seasonal” routes (solid or dashed red on the MDOT Truck Operators Map), there will be a 25% reduction for rigid pavements and 35% for flexible pavements. Extended permits are applicable for oversized loads only within the restricted area. Single-trip permits won’t be granted for overweight loads or those exceeding 14 feet in width, 11 axles, and 150 feet in overall length within the weight-restricted region. Michigan’s oversize and overweight regulations define the parameters for such loads. An oversized load is determined by dimensions, including a width of 8′ 6″, a height of 13′ 6″, and a length of 65′ for a truck-semi-trailer. Overweight loads, governed by maximum axle weights, set single axle limits at 20,000 lb., tandem axles at 34,000 lb., and a maximum gross weight of 80,000 lb.
Maine Trip and Fuel Permits
Trip permits are essential for Michigan operators traveling out of state, and a 72-hour reciprocity permit is required for out-of-state operators entering Michigan. A Temporary Fuel permit is issued instead of IFTA licensing for travel within the state. Running hours are confined to daylight hours during weekdays, with holiday restrictions.
