Legal load limits.

Massachusetts DOT legal load size and weight limitations:

Length: We’ve got 48′ on a trailer length and that you have to have a permit for a 53′ trailer. Working on an overall legal length. Please comment below.
Height: 13′ 6″ is the maximum height allowed.
Weight:
8′ 6″ in the maximum height allowed by the Massachusetts DOT – see MA DOT website for legal limits.
Overhang:
3′ in the front and 4′ off of the rear of the trailer.

Routine trucking permits.

Massachusetts oversize and overweight trucking permits that are issued by the DOT routinely:

Length: 115′ is the maximum load length on a routine trucking permit.
Width: 14′ 11″  wide is the limit on routine permits.
Height: 14′ 11″ on the maximum height as well for routine permits.
Weight: Everything depends on the axle spacings here. You will still max out at about 130,000 lbs and after that, it’s probably a superload but you never know – axle spacings and routing is everything.
Overhang: Case by case basis. Figure probably around 12′ but maybe more.
Notes: Any loads over 13′ 8″ are going to require a route survey unless it is the main road routing with simplicity. There is no fee for a special handling permit for vehicles that are under the following restrictions: 12′ 0″ wide, 13′ 6″ height, 99,000 lbs maximum, 100′ in length.

Superload information.

Massachusetts superload information:

For shipments in excess of 130,000 lbs depending on your route, you may be classified as a superload. We need more superload information on this state if you can share your superload experience with the Massachusetts DOT we’d sure appreciate it. See below for easy comments.

Permitted travel times and restrictions.

Massachusetts DOT travel time and restrictions for oversize and overweight shipments:

Daylight hours are defined as from sunrise to sunset. You are permitted to travel Monday morning from 12’01 am until 12 noon on Saturday morning during the daylight hours. This includes shipments that are between the width of 12′ and 14′, over 80′ in length (but not over 115′), and over 14′ in height with the exception of 3:30 PM until 7 PM due to traffic density on Mondays thru Fridays. For shipments that are in excess of 14′ wide and over 115′ in length are permitted to travel only between the hours of 9:30 AM until 3:30 PM and may travel only on the days of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Additional restrictions may apply depending on your routing so be sure to refer to the documentation on your physical permit before commencing movement.  You may not travel on any of these holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas day.

When pilot cars are required.

Massachusetts DOT may require your shipment to have a pilot car(s) or escort vehicle(s) if you are over any of the following:

ROADS AND HIGHWAYS:

Length: 80′ – 94′ 11″ in length will require you to have 1 rear pilot car/escort. If over 94′ 11″ you are required to have 1 front and 1 rear pilot car. If you are over 134′ in length you will be required to have 1 front and 1 rear pilot car as well as a police escort.
Width: Shipments that are from 12′ 1″ and up to 13′ 6″  wide require 1 rear escort vehicle unless you are shipping a dozer. A dozer requires 1 front pilot car and 1 rear escort vehicle. For shipments in excess of 13′ 6″, you are required to have 1 front pilot car and 1 rear escort on all roads.
Height:  If your shipment is in excess of  13′ 8″ you are required to have a high pole survey. If your shipment is over 14′ 11″ you are required to have 1 front pilot car with a high pole and 1 rear escort with a police escort.
Weight: Depending on your routing and if you can maintain the minimum required posted speed limits you will more than likely not be required to have a pilot car or escort vehicle by the Massachusetts DOT.
Overhang: If you have over 4′ of rear overhang consisting of long materials like poles, boat masts, and booms you will be required to have 1 rear escort vehicle. If you have equipment with an overhang in excess of 10′ or more you will be required to have 1 rear escort vehicle.
Notes: If the routing on your shipment will take you through tunnels you will be required to have at a minimum 1 rear escort vehicle if over 8′ 6″ – 12′ wide.

MASSACHUSETTS TURNPIKES:
Length If your shipment is over 80′ but under 85′ you are required to have 1 rear escort vehicle. If your shipment is over 85′ but less than 135′ you are required to have 1 front pilot car and 1 rear escort vehicle. If your shipment is in excess of 135′ you will be required to have 1 front pilot car, 1 rear escort vehicle, and 2 police escorts.
Width: If your shipment is in excess of 12′ you will be required to have 1 rear escort vehicle. If your shipment is in excess of 13′ wide you will be required to have 1 front pilot car, 1 rear escort vehicle. If your shipment is in excess of 15′ you will be required to have 1 front pilot car and 1 rear escort vehicle plus 2 police escorts.
Height: We have found no reference to pilot car high pole requirements on the Massachusetts turnpike. If you have any information please help others by commenting below.
Weight: Weight restrictions are handled on a case-by-case basis for the Massachusetts turnpike.
Overhang: 1 rear escort is required if you have overhand in excess of 4′ that is skinny in nature like a long pole, boat mast, etc. If the overhang is in excess of 10′ but not skinny in nature you will be required to have 1 rear escort vehicle.
Notes: The turnpike can do pretty much whatever they want so if you find your trip requirements modified from what you expected then that is just the way it is. You could always appeal the decision. For items suck as drivable cranes and booms up to about 12′ in the width you are usually required to have 1 rear escort vehicle.

IN THE CITY OF BOSTON:
Notes: If you are overweight or oversize you will most likely be required to have at a minimum, 1 pilot car/escort vehicle, and 1 police escort.

Pilot car certifications & requirements.

The Massachusetts DOT maintains that pilot cars and escort vehicles meet the following:

Massachusetts DOT requires all escort vehicles to have 2 flashing or strobing amber lights that are visible from both the front and the rear of the vehicle as well as have 2 safety colored red or orange flags mounted to the vehicle that is no less than 24″ square in shape. At least one sight that states “OVERSIZE LOAD” mounted and visible from either the front or the rear of the vehicle depending if you are piloting (front) or escorting (rear).

Shipment, truck and trailer markings.

Truck, trailer, and shipment required signs, banners, and flags:

An oversize load sign should be placed on the rear of the trailer or load whichever is appropriate. The dimensions for this sign should be no less than 7′ in length x 18″ in height with a yellow background and black letters with a line thickness of no less than 1 1/2″ thick and letters no less than 10″ in height. Safety colored red or orange flags are required at a minimum of the 4 most outer extreme corners and be no less than 18″ in length in any direction.
Note: in addition, we suggest an amber light but at the time of this writing Apr 2013 it is not required.

As per the state of Arizona please read the following:

“The Arizona Department of Transportation in cooperation with state representatives, industry, the Department of Public Safety  and local law enforcement personnel work in collaboration to update and amend oversize and overweight special permit rules containing special permit requirements, restrictions and allowances for transporting oversize and overweight vehicles and loads on highways under the jurisdiction of the Department. This is a council established in statute and makes up the Over-dimensional Permit Council.

These rules detail the eligibility, application and use requirements for a variety of permits the Department currently issues to commercial motor carriers for transporting vehicles or vehicle and load combinations exceeding the maximum size or weight limitations provided by statute.

Each special permit provided by the Department under these rules is specifically authorized by statute.  The oversize and overweight special permits issued under these rules are that each permittee issued a particular class of permit is subject to the same activities, practices, requirements and restrictions applicable to that permit type. The statutes additionally provide authority for issuance, conditions, restrictions, approvals and fees.”

Do I need a trucking permit? Legal load limits.

Arizona maximum load limits until a trucking permit is required:

Length: Anything over 65 feet in length overall requires a permit on non-designated highways.
Overhang: 3 feet in the front and 6 feet off of the rear of trailer maximum (make sure your route is approved for overhang as there are location variations).
Weight: 80,000 pounds overall (GVW), 12,000 pounds on steer axle.
Width: 8 feet and 6 inches wide maximum.
Height: 14 feet maximum on interstates and 13 feet and 6 inches in height on secondary roads.

Routine heavy haul and oversize trucking permits in Arizona.

These maximum dimensions/weights are considered routine oversize or heavy-haul trucking permits in Arizona:

Length: 120 feet maximum or proceed to super load section.
Weight:  250,000 pounds maximum (Class C if over or see superloads). Single axle is 28,000 pounds maximum. All tandem, tridum, trunnion and quadem axle configurations depend on axle spacings and tire sizes. Gross weight maximums: 5 axles is 104,000 pounds, 6 axles is 108,000 pounds, 7 axles is 117,000 pounds. The permissible maximum weights depend on the number of tires combined with the overall distance between each of the axles. Spacings on axles are a little bit tricky in this state. The Arizona DOT permits office will consider a number or factors but it’s primarily about the bridges which could require a route survey if extreme weights are involved. If weights are excessive and trailer capabilities are even close to short of maxing out, forget it! Pavement, structural and stress testing results will govern your overall permissible capabilities.
Width: 14 feet wide maximum or file under super load.
Height: 16 tall maximum or file under super load.
Overhang:  3 feet of front or 6 feet off of the rear or any configuration that is in excess of 75 feet. They could require you to use a stretch trailer before allowing you to proceed under super load provisions.
Notes: These above routinely permitted shipments will need to be filed as class “A” permits. Class A permits are anything under 120 feet in length, 14 feet in width, 16 feet in height or under 250,000 pounds overall. Maximum speed is set at 55 mph for all oversize/overweight shipments.

Super load information for Arizona.

Arizona state DOT will classify your shipment as a super load if you are in excess of any of the following:

If a shipment exceeds any of the following it is classified as a superload and will require a class C permit. Class C permits are “super load permits”. If any shipment is in excess of 120 feet in length or 14 feet in width or 16 feet in height or 250,000 pounds in weight it is classified as a super load.

Lights, safety flags and warning signs for heavy haul and oversize loads.

Required safety markings, safety flags, warning lights for heavy haul and oversize loads:

If shipment is over 102″ in width it must be flagged on the 4 outtermost corners of the entire combined shipment. Flags must be red in color and be not less than 12″ in either direction. Proper “OVERSIZE LOAD” or “WIDELOAD” banner/sign bust be displayed on both the upper most front of overall shipment (front of truck) no less than 5′ from the pavement line. Banner/sign must be no less than 6′ in length and 12′ in height with reasonable and size letting thickness and height. If you are seeking or awarded night movement reflective or illuminated banners/signs are required.

When pilot cars or escort vehicles are required.

Heavy-haul or oversize loads may be required to be accompanies by a escort vehicle or pilot car if:

Length: On 2 Lanes:Over 120’ requires 1 pilot car in front of truck and 1 rear of truck.
Width: On 2 lanes over 14’ requires 1 pilot car or escort vehicle in front of truck and 1 the rear of truck. On Interstates over 15’ wide you are required to have 1 pilot car in front of truck.
Height: Over 17 feet requires 1 pilot car equipped with a height pole in front of truck.
On Interstates: Over 120’ requires 1 pilot car in front of truck.

Pilot cars/escort vehicle certifications and requirements.

Pilot car or escort vehicle mandatory operator certifications and vehicle requirements:

For a vehicle to qualify; all pilot car/escort vehicles must have a manufacturers gross weight rating not to exceed over over 20,000 pounds. All pilot cars/escort vehicles must display a bumper or roof mounted “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign visible from both the front and rear of the vehicle.  Sign must be at least 6 feet long and 12 inches in height, yellow in color with black letters no less than 5 inches tall and 1 inch in width. Vehicle must have 4 safety flags displayed in red or orange in color and be a minimum of 12 inches in length quare and/or height mounted at a 40 to 70 degree angle on all 4 corners of the vehicle.   Vehicle must be equipped with a  CB radio or 2-way communication device, 8 ignitable road flares and have a first-aid kit.

Legal travel times for oversize and heavy haul loads in Arizona.

Travel times and restrictions for heavy-haul and oversize loads:

The one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset rule applies.  Travel on weekends and holidays is permitted. Night time travel applies to any shipment that does not exceed 120 feet in length or 16 feet wide or 16 feet tall or less than 250,000 pounds. If your are empty but over weight you’ll be allowed to travel continuously more than likely. If overweight only you will probably be allowed continuous travel. Under 10 feet of overhang, 10 feet in width or 14 feet in height will more than likely be granted continuous travel. Some loads will NOT be granted travel on weekends. Always refer to the documentation on your permit to verify travel times.

Legal load limits.

Alberta DOT legal load limits:

Length: The overall maximum length allowed in Alberta without a permit is 23 meters (75′ 3″).
Width: The maximum width allowed is 2.6 meters (8′ 6″‘).
Height: The maximum height allowed in Alberta is 4.15 meters 13′ 7″.
Weight: 6,000 kg maximum on steer axle. Tandem axles: 17,000 kg. Tridum axels is 17,000 kilograms (37,478.6 lbs) as well. All axle weights are subject to the size of the tire.
Overhang: We have no information on allowable overhang in Alberta. Please share your knowledge with others below.
Notes:

* Super single tires require “New Generation, Wide Base” tires with a minimum tire width of 445 mm. Available by permit only. Super single tires do not apply to the steering axle.
** These weights for tridem axles apply to provincial highways only. The maximum weight for a tridem axle on a municipal road is 17,000 kg. Permits may be available to achieve heavier weights.
*** All axle weights are subject to minimum tire size. The maximum weight per tire shall not exceed the lesser of the tire manufacturer’s weight rating or the width of the tire stamped on the sidewall multiplied by 10 kg/mm.

Routine trucking permits.

Oversize and overweight trucking permits that are routinely issued by the Alberta DOT:

Length: 52 meters (170′ 8″) is about the maximum length you can get by with on a routine permit.
Width: 14′ 7″ wide depending on routing  for routine trucking permits.
Height: 5.3 meters (17′ 5″) in height is the cut off point for routine permits of course contingent on routing.
Weight: Weight is where you run into a problem. Alberta wants to know every single detail down to the size of tire you are running. Routing being a huge issue we can’t state a “routine” weight as it all depends on your axle spacings, combinations and tire sizes. Just for a safe number we’re going to say a routine permit caps out at 43,359.2 kilograms (100,000 lbs).
Overhang: 6.09 meters is about the most you can get on routine depending on routing.

Superload information.

Alberta superload information:

The maximum width normally allowed is 7.32 meters (24′) so anything over this width is a superload. We are researching information pertaining to shipping superloads in the province of Alberta Canada. Permitted travel times & restrictions.

Alberta DOT travel times and restrictions for oversize and overweight trucking:

The rule of 1/2 hour before sunrise until one full hour after sunset is observed in Alberta. Travel is allowed on Fridays until 3pm in the afternoon for loads that exceed 3.85 meters in width (12′ 7″) (WE WILL NEED TO DOUBLE CHECK THIS AS IT WAS LEFT AS A CORRECTION COMMENT BELOW). Travel is otherwise allowed and unrestricted on Saturdays unless stated on your permit.  Night travel is permitted for loads that are over length as long as you have 1 rear pilot car/escort vehicle and are on multiple lane roads. If your shipment is no longer than of 42 meters (137′ 10″) on a single lane road you will be required to have1 front pilot car/escort vehicle and 1 rear pilot car/escort vehicle. Weekend travel is permitted for loads that are over length only. If your shipment is in excess of 4.45 meters (14′ 7″) in width you will be permitted to travel only during daylight hours. If over 3.85 meters (12′ 7″) in width you may not travel on Sundays. There is not travel permitted on the following holidays: New Years day, Provincial day, Good Friday, Victoria day, Canada day, Family day, Labour day, Thanksgiving day, Remembrance day, Christmas day and on Boxing day.

Adverse weather conditions: If adverse weather conditions are reported you may not proceed with your shipment and are required to remain where ever you are. If adverse weather conditions interrupt your shipment you are required to pull over at the nearest suitable location even if it is on the side of the road unless you are over width. Over width loads must continue until they are able to completely turn off of the road and remain until adverse weather conditions stop. If your shipment is over 4.45 meters (14′ 7″) in width or 5.32 meters (17′ 5″) in height you are not permitted to travel with snow or fog visibility less than 150 meters (492′), if the road is covered with snow or ice or sleet or any other conditions that may effect the driver from proceeding with the absolute safety in mind first and foremost.

Frost laws: Alberta does have frost laws but when they are in effect changes every year based on testing with a heat flow model that measures to 30 cm below the surface. So, if you are shipping during the spring months you will need to call the number below for the exact frost law restriction dates. There are exemptions which include milk and bread trucks, farm machinery, water, fuel, fertilizer, mail and buses.

When pilot cars are required.

If your shipment is in excess of any of the following you will be required to have a pilot car escort you:

Length: If your shipment is in excess of 34 meters (111′) in overall length you are required to have 1 rear pilot car on single lane roads. For shipments in excess of 38 meters (124′ 8″) you are required to have 1 front pilot car/escort and 1 rear pilot car/escort.
Width: If your shipment is in excess of 3.85 meters (12′ 7″) wide you are required to have 1 front pilot car/escort on a single lane road or one rear pilot car/escort on multiple lane roads. For shipments over 4.45 meters (14′ 7″) wide require 1 front pilot car/escort and 1 rear pilot car/escort on single lane roads. If your shipment is in excess of 5.5 meters (18′) you are required to have 1 front and 1 rear pilot car/escort vehicle on all roads.
Height: Alberta does not normally use pilot cars with high poles as they have designated routes for shipments that are over height. You can view the routes on the Alberta DOT high load corridor page located here.
Weight: As long as your shipment can maintain the minimum required speed limit you will probably not be required to have a pilot car/escort by the Alberta DOT.
Overhang: If you have overhang that is over 6.5 meters (21′ 4″) you will be required to have 1 rear pilot car/escort vehicle. If your shipment overhang is in excess of 9 meters (29′ 6″) you will be required to have 1 front and 1 rear pilot car/escort vehicle.

Pilot car requirements.

Pilot car (escort vehicle) requirements for operating in Alberta province are as follows:

Pilot car/escort vehicle operators are NOT required to take any sort of DOT certification course in order to operate in Canada. Your vehicle is required however to have a lighted sign box that is a minimum of 180 cm x 35 cm x 10 cm (72″ x 14″ x 4″), 2 – 175 mm (7″) diameter flashing lights mounted on the top of the sign box on each side with 2 amber strobing or rotating lights a minimum of 203 mm (8″) mounted between the flashing lights on top of the box as well. The sign box must light up and be visible from a minimum distance of 200 meters (656′). The sign box must have either a red and white D sign or a yellow with black lettering stating “OVERSIZE LOAD”, “WIDE LOAD”,  OR “LONG LOAD”. If you have the “D” sign your letter must be no less than 20 cm (8″) in height with a 4 cm (1 5/8″) line thickness. If you have the yellow sign your lettering must be no less than 20 cm (8″) with a 4 cm (1 5/8″) line thickness. The sign box must be mounted on the top of the vehicle and covered when not in operation. You are also expected to have the following items inside of the vehicle: CB radio or high powered 2-way radio, first aid kit, fire extinguisher type A, B & C of at least a 2 liters, 3 reflective road triangles, 3 traffic cones, reflective vest (worn while working), slow/stop sign, 3 red or orange safety colored flags no less than 40 x 40 cm (16″ x 16″), nose cone flashlight and a hard hat.

Shipment, truck & trailer markings.

All trucks that are hauling oversize or overweight loads must have a strobing, flashing or rotating amber light mounted to the roof that is visible from 360 degrees at a minimum distance of 200 meters (656′). All 4 outermost corners corners of the overall shipment and any obtrusive points must have flags mounted to them that are safety red or orange in color no less than 40 cm x 40 cm (16″ x 16″) and have the flags exchanged for lighting if moving during the night. A sign stating the nature of the load; “OVERSIZE LOAD”, “WIDE LOAD” or “LONG LOAD” must be mounted to the front and rear of the overall shipment. Signs must be a minimum of 12′ in height and 6′ in width with a yellow background and black letting with lettering thickness no less than 4 cm (1 5/8″) thick.

Many areas incorporate temporary special weight limits and restrictions (frost or thaw laws) during the winter and spring months of the year. These temporary restrictions are usually referred to as “frost laws” or “thaw laws” and implemented typically during the month or March and April. In some Northern States and Provinces frost laws can still be in effect in July as it’s much colder in the North. Since these restrictions are implemented on a “as needed” basis it is possible many of the official government websites may not have published this temporary restriction in a convenient place as frost laws are also subject to change at any moment based on the temperature of the roads core. You want to be certain to check with the appropriate officials to verify the latest changes in the laws.

Why we have these laws and must protect our roads and highways.

In order to keep the trucking industry operating the Northern US states and Canadian provinces rely on engineers and scientific data to determine which dates frost laws will be in effect. With fairly recent advances in science and technology, data is much more reliable. This helps with the implementation of “Frost Laws” or “Seasonal Weight Restrictions” ensuring they are not implemented to early or late. While no State or Province desires to delay the transportation of goods through their territory it is imperative public assets are protected.

In areas that constantly get negative (ie: -10 below zero) temperatures the amount of damages has forced Northern US States as well as Canadian Provinces to create and enact laws that restrict vehicle weights during the spring and winter months (specifically trucking companies) when the roads and bridges are thawing out. There are all kinds of things that can go wrong with different types of roads and pavements. For example the State of Michigan has implemented permanent frost laws that go into effect during the months of March through May (and in some cases even June). Some routes require legal axle weight limits be decreased by as much as 35%. Some areas and local governments may also limit heavy-haul vehicle speeds to a maximum of 35 miles per hour during frost/thaw law months regardless of posted limits.

One of many examples is in Southern Oregon on old US Highway 1 (which follows the coast line from Mexico to Canada) the road is as much as 16 feet thick as years of pavement (even bricks) has been laid down year after year since the early 1900’s. It should be noted that today’s technology is able to provide us with roads that are flexible due to the engineering of the construction process and the materials used. Excessive weight exerted by overloaded axles (or a weakened supporting base) can cause the pavement to bend or deform. The strength of the road combined with its resistance to bending determines the amount of weight the roadway can handle.

Legal load limits.
Legal Loads:

Length: Trailers 48′ on some routes and 53′ on others.  This is trailer length.  We can’t find overall legal length so if you know please comment below to help others, thanks!
Width: 8’ 6” wide.
Height: 14’ tall.
Weight: 80,000 lbs. GVW, 20,000 single, 34,000 tandem.
Overhang: 3′ in the front and 6′ in the rear.

Routine trucking permits.
Routine over-weight, oversize shipping, trucking and transport permits:

Length: Up to 90′ long on a single unit and 110′ on a combined unit.  If shipment is over 81′ long there must be visibility of over 1,000′, the wind must be under 45 MPH and there must me NO accumulation of ice or snow on the roadway.
Width: Up to 18′ wide depending on routing.
Height: 17′
Weight: Single 25,000 lbs. (reported up to 29,500 lbs), tandem axle 55,000 lbs., tridem axle 65,000 lbs., 74,000 lbs. with a gross weight determined by your axle configurations. For loads exceeding 150,000 pounds expect permit issuance time delays.  UT bridge calculations link.
Overhang: Case by case basis.  Figure less than 1/3 of item being shipped overall length.

Notes: Utah has a lot of rules.  All loads in excess of 175′ in length MUST have 1 police escort.  Loads in excess of 200′ must have 2 police escorts.  Exception: shipment is unladen (decked).

Mobile homes in excess of 16 feet wall-to-wall width will be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Department. Contact Headquarters Port of Entry at 801-965-4508 for information.

Legal travel times.
Travel times and restrictions:

One half hour before sunrise and one half hour after sunset rule applies. If your shipment exceeds in excess of 92′ in length, 10′ in width or 14′ in height you may NOT travel Monday – Friday during the hours of 6-9 am and 3:30 pm until 6 am in any of the following locations;

  • South of Perry, UT exit 360 when in Box Elder County.
  • Davis, Salt lake and Weber Counties.
  • Utah County; Mile post 16, North of the I-15 and SR-75 interchange, exit 265 and SR-68.

Weekend travel is permitted is some areas but not many. The Utah DOT has a maze of Yes and No’s as well as sometimes.  No travel on the following holidays: New Years day, Memorial day, Independence day, Labor day, Thanksgiving day and Christmas day – and Pioneer day (July 24th).  If the holiday is on a Friday all travel stops by 2 pm on Thursday and does not resume until Tuesday morning.  Utah DOT will shut down oversize travel ANYTIME there is an abundance of traffic on the roads as noted during the first week of hunting season.  The Saturday closest to October 20th will be shut down and operations will not resume again until Monday morning.  Excessive weather will shut it down as well.

When pilot cars are required.
Pilot Car and Escort vehicle information:

Length: If shipment is over 110′ long you will require 1 front and one rear pilot car (escort).
Width: If shipment is over 14′ in width you will be required to have 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort).
Height: All depends on proposed routing. If height of load exceeds 15′ you will “probably” be required to have a front high pole escort but not positively. If height is 17′ you will more than likely be required to have a high pole escort in the front of the load. Call and speak with them directly for clarification.
Weight: Check with the Utah port of to see if your weight class will require a pilot car/escort.
Overhang: No specified limits. This is something they like to see for themselves at the ports. If your load is secure and safe looking but not too long overall and have flags/amber lights then you will possibly not be required to have a pilot car.

Pilot car certifications.
Pilot car and escort vehicle requirements:

A pilot car (escort) driver MUST have some sort of certified training to operate in the state of Utah. You can complete their course of IF your states course is approved by Utah you can operate in lieu of that. Approved states at the time of this publishing are CO, FL, OK, NC and WA states.  You also have to have a minimum of $75,000.00 in liability insurance.  For more information on operating in this state contact Utah Motor Carriers Port of Entry and ask about Certification Program Rule 912.

Your appropriate sign must be mounted on the very top of your vehicle. This sign must be no less than 5′ in width and 10″ in height with a yellow background will black letters no less than 8″ in height and 1″ thick.  An extra banner that is no less than 7′ x 18″ in case the load looses the one that marks it and it must state “OVERSIZE LOAD”. You must have 2 – 6″ (minimum) amber warning lights mounted on each side of the sign.  The lights must either rotate or strobe and be rated at 1,000 candle power visible 360 degrees from at minimum distance of 500′. These are required to be mounted on a lightbar.  It should be noted that the amber lights must be AAMVA certified. You must have a CB radio or 2-way communication device (POWERFUL) and be in constant contact with the truck driver of the shipment at ALL times. The pilot car must also carry the following; 24″ minimum size stop/slow hand held paddle sign, 8 igniting and burning road flares, 8 reflective road triangles, hard hat, reflective safety vest or jacket, large flashlight that runs on DC batteries with additional batteries, 3 orange traffic cones with a minimum height of 18″, non-conductive height measuring device (height pole), fire extinguisher with electrical rating and a first aid kit.  Of course your vehicle must have a jack, spare time and a lug wrench.

Pilot car (escort vehicles) must have a maximum weight of 12,000 pounds and the wheelbase of the vehicle must be a minimum of 96″ to qualify.

Alabama maximum load limits until a trucking permit is required:

Length: Trailer length maximum allowed is 57 feet (17.37 meters) including combinations.
Width: 8 feet and 6 inches (2.59 meters) wide for most roads, 8 feet (2.43 meters) for roads under 12 feet (3.65 meters) in width.
Height: 13 feet and 6 inches (4.11 meters) tall.
Weight: 80,000 pounds (36287.39 kilograms) gross (GVW).
Overhang: 4 feet (1.21 meters) off of the rear and 5 feet from the front of trailer.

Routine oversize and heavy-haul trucking permits.

These maximum dimensions/weights are considered routine oversize or heavy-haul trucking permits in Alabama:

Length: 150 feet (45.72 meters) maximum length overall.
Width: 16 feet (4.87 meters) if shipment is over 16 feet in width you are not permitted use the interstate system.
Height: 16 feet (4.87 meters) in total height.
Weight: on a single axle; 22,000 pounds (9979 kg), tandem axles: 44,000 pounds (19958 kg), tridum axles: 66,000 pounds (29937 kg), quadem axles: 88,000 pounds (39916 kg), 5 axles: 102,000 pounds (46266 kg), 6 axles: 124,000 pounds (56245 kg), 7 axles: 146,000 pounds (66224 kg), 8 axles: 168,000 pounds (76203 kg).
Overhang: 20 feet (6.09 meters) maximum.
Notes: Alabama state permitting department no longer uses the metric system. On shipments in excess of any of the above dimensions or 180,000 pounds proceed to the super load section below for more information. Loads with weight restrictions are subject to a bridge analysis.

Super load information for Alabama.

Alabama state DOT will classify any shipment in excess of the following as a super load:

Defined as shipments in excess of any of the following dimensions/weights; over 250,000 pounds (113398.0 kilograms) of gross weight, over 16 feet (4.87 meters) in width, over 16 feet in height, over 150 feet (45.72 meters) long. Anything of this nature will require special ALDOT approval. Detailed drawings will be required and need to include shop drawings of the item being shipped, the truck and trailer axle weights and spacings for both truck tractor and trailer. A letter from the manufacturer is required certifying the shipment is reduced to the lowest possible size and weight configuration as well as an explanation of why it can not be shipped by other means such as by barge or port. Loads exceeding 150,000 pounds (68038.8 kilograms)are subject to a full scale structural bridge analysis if bridges are in the route. A special weight authorization (SWA) is required from the permit office to initiate the necessary bridge rating section investigation as well. Night travel (9PM – 6AM) may be required with a state trooper or police escort (minimum of 2 when travelling). A route survey will probably be required. The Alabama State Troopers Association handles all of the scheduling of police/trooper escorts after your super load permit has been issued. A lighting system configured from strobe warning lights must be placed on each extremity of the shipment in addition to basic requirements such as flags and oversize load signs. All rail road crossings must be identified and railroad must be notified in advance of your intent to cross as well as date and time. ALDOT will more than likely verify this with the railroad and not issue a super load permit until verified. It is the carriers responsibility to notify the railroad of each intended crossing. At each rail crossing you will find a small plaque with a phone number and a “crossing number” that identifies each crossing for submitting cross requests. A bucket truck is required to accompany loads that exceed 16 feet and 5 inches (5.0 meters) in height and it is the carriers responsibility to show proof of “utility notification” for shipments in excess of 16 feet and 6 inches (5.02 meters) in height. City or county approval is required for Alabama super loads as well, please see the Alabama list of county engineers for contact details. Lights, safety flags and warning signs for heavy haul and oversize loads.

Required safety markings, safety flags, warning lights for heavy haul and oversize loads:

A sign will need to be mounted on the front and rear of any over width or over length truck and trailer or combinations. Banners/signs need to be a minimum of 7 feet (2.13 meters) in width, 18 inches (45.7 centimeters) in height and be marked with black letters of no less than 10 inches (25.4 centimeters) in height, with a minimum of a 1-5/8 inch (4.12 centimeters) line thickness on a yellow or orange background. The actual words required are exactly as follows: “OVERSIZE LOAD”. Red flags must be a minimum of 18 inches (45.7 centimeters) square and be placed at all 4 outer most corners of all over-dimensional shipments.

When pilot cars or escort vehicles are required.

Heavy-haul or oversize loads may be required to be accompanies by a escort vehicle or pilot car if:

1 front pilot car (escort vehicle) is required for all loads over 15 feet and 6 inches (4.72 meters) in height with a height pole will be required adjusted 4-6 inches (10.16 – 12.7 centimeters) higher than the actual shipment. On some routes a high pole pilot (escort) may be required for even less heights. Two front and one rear pilot car (escort vehicle) is required for any shipment in excess of 12 feet (3.65 meters) wide. Rear pilot cars (escort vehicles) for mobile home shipments may be replaced with two 5 inch (12.7 centimeters) flashing, stobing or rotating amber lights. 1 rear pilot car (escort) is required for shipments over 85 feet (25.90 meters) in length. 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort vehicle) is required for shipments over 105 feet (32.0 meters) in length. 1 rear pilot car (escort) is required if overhang exceeds 10 feet (3.04 meters) from the front of the trailer or 5 feet (1.52 meters) off of the rear of the trailer. There are special escort requirements for bulldozers, scrapers, loaders and other construction equipment being transported with a blade or bucket intact. However on some routes that are 2 lane roads may require 1 front pilot car and on some 4 lane roads 1 rear escort.

Pilot cars/escort vehicle certifications and requirements.

Pilot car or escort vehicle mandatory operator certifications and vehicle requirements:

A pilot car vehicle must be classified as an actual passenger vehicle to qualify, ie; car, truck, van, etc. A pilot car vehicle must be equipped with a strobing, flashing or rotating amber light. The pilot car must be able to communicate with and be in constant contact with all parties working in relation to the shipment by CB or 2-way radio. Also see federal requirements for pilot cars and escort vehicles. Signs mounted on pilot car vehicles must moderately fit the vehicle and not be obtrusive in any manner.

Legal travel times for oversize and heavy haul loads.

Travel times and restrictions for heavy-haul and oversize loads:

One half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. Travel is allowed all day Saturday with NO SUNDAY TRAVEL PERMITTED. Shipments 120 feet (36.57 meters) to 150 feet (45.72 meters) in length are restricted from moving from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM Mondays through Fridays. Travel is NO permitted on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The Alabama DOT state permit office is closed on these holidays as well as on Martin Luther King Day, Washington’s Birthday, Columbus Day, Confederate Memorial Day, Jefferson Davis’ Birthday and on Veteran’s Day. Length: 50 feet from the kingpin to the rear of the trailer or load that is on the trailer. Any type of pole shipping that exceeds 75 feet overall will require a oversize transport permit to be issued.
Width: 8 feet 6 inches wide.
Height: 13 feet and 6 inches tall.
Weight: 80,000 pounds gross (GVW).
Overhang: 4 feet in the rear (requires 12 inch red safety flag) and 4 feet in the front.

Routine oversize and heavy-haul trucking permits.

These maximum dimensions/weights are considered routine oversize or heavy-haul trucking permits in TN:

Length: 120 feet long overall.
Width: 16 feet wide. Anything that is in excess of 4 inches from either/both sides of the trailer is required to be flagged in front and rear. Flags must be 12 inches square minimum and safety colored orange or red.
Height: 15 feet about does it for max height in TN on most routes. At 15 feet in height you can count on being required to have a high pole (hi pole) escort.
Weight: Single axle 20,000 lbs, tandem axles 40,000 lbs, tridum axles 60,000 lbs, quadem axles, 80,000 lbs. Gross weight on 5 axles is 100,000 pounds, 6 axles 120,000 pounds, 7 axles 140,000 pounds, 8 axles 160,000 pounds.  Once you hit 150,000 pounds that’s in in TN.  You’re going to have to be granted special permission for your shipment to move.
Overhang: Depends on routing.  10 feet is probably not going to be a problem but much more than that is going to create delays.  Over 1/3 of actual item being shipped length is not going to go over real well.  Consider a different trailer is you are time sensitive. If shipment is extended beyond 4 feet from the rear of trailer red safety flags a minimum of 12 inches square are required on both sides.

Tennessee super-loads.

Requirements for extra heavy or extra dimensional (superloads) in TN:

Shipments that are defined as super-loads are typically any that exceed any of the weights or dimensions described above in routine oversize and heavy-haul trucking permits. Shipments that are in excess of  15 feet in height or 16 feet in width will not be allowed to travel via conventional permits if they is a public safety factor including potential property damages. Shipments that exceed 16 feet in height are seriously frowned on in the state of TN and will require additional approval to be considered for permitting.

Legal travel times for oversize and heavy haul loads.

Travel times and restrictions:

The one half hour before sunrise and one half hour after sunset basic rule applies. No travel on Sunday. If over-weight only continuous travel is permitted. Night time travel for overweight is not a problem as long as minimum speed limit can be maintained by carrier.  Anything other than over-weight is daylight travel only for the most part unless otherwise specified on your permit.  In cities and high density traffic areas travel may be restricted between 7 and 9 AM and 4 and 6 PM on weekdays – be sure to refer to your permit. On the following holidays no travel is permitted: New Years day, Good Friday, Memorial day, Independence day, Labor day, Thanksgiving day and Christmas day.  The Tennessee state DOT permit office is closed on these days as well and additionally on:  Martin Luther King day, Presidents day, Columbus day, Veterans day and the day after Thanksgiving. However, travel is not restricted on any of these days if it is not on a Sunday unless otherwise specified on your permit. Note that failure to comply with designated travel time restrictions can result in the carrier/shipment being placed on permit issue restriction for 365 days. When pilot cars or escort vehicles are required.

Heavy-haul or oversize loads may be required to be accompanied by a escort vehicle or pilot car if:

  • 75 feet to 85 feet you may be permitted to use a amber strobe light.
  • 85 feet requires 1 pilot car.
  • 120 feet requires 2 pilot cars.

Width:

2 lane roads:

  • 10 feet requires 1 pilot car unless the pavement is 24 feet wide edge line (white line on side) to edge line.
  • 14 feet requires 1 pilot car and 1 escort vehicle.

4 lane roads:

  • 12 feet 6 inches requires 1 escort vehicle.
  • 14 feet requires 1 pilot car and 1 escort vehicle.

Height:

  • 15 feet will require a pilot car equipped with a height pole.

Notes: Combination loads are not permitted if two oversize dimensions exist. Example: a bulldozer with a wide blade and another piece of machinery that is too tall on one single trailer. Blades and buckets on bulldozers or grading machinery are common examples. All oversize machinery must be loaded onto a trailer with extremities facing towards the rear of the trailer. Any machinery shipments with blades or buckets, etc. that is in excess of 13 feet and 6 inches will not be permitted unless removed from the machinery

DETAILS

Length: For overall lengths of up to 85 feet you can get by with a rotating or strobing amber light. If shipment is over 85 feet and 1 inch in length you will be required to have 1 pilot car (escort vehicle). If your shipment combination is over 120 feet in length you be required to have 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles.
Width: If shipment is under 10 feet wide you will need no pilot cars (escorts).  Shipments 10 feet 1 inch to 12 feet wide will require 1 pilot car on a 2 lane road if the distance from one side of the road to the other is less than 24 feet in width with the shoulder size excluded in measurement.  If your load is over 12 feet (up to 14 feet) wide you will be required to have 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort vehicle) on all 2 lane roads and highways. If your load measures 12 feet t0 14 feet in width and you are traveling on a 4 lane highway you will only be required to have 1 rear pilot car (escort vehicle).  If your shipment is 14 feet to 16 feet in width you will be required to have 1 front and 1 rear pilot car (escort vehicle).
Height: If height of load exceeds 15 feet a front high pole vehicle is required.
Weight: If the shipment is able to maintain minimum speeds no escort vehicle is required.
Overhang: This is determined on a case-by-case basis.  It will depend on your proposed routing.  If you have any additional information on over-hang please comment below in order to help others.  Thank you.

NOTE:  Mobile homes exception.  All mobile homes up to 16 feet wide will be required to have 1 front and 1 rear pilot car.  Mobile homes are also allowed to travel on every day except for Sundays.  Travel times are from 9 am until 4 pm with all day travel permitted on Saturdays.

Pilot car or escort vehicle mandatory operator certifications and vehicle requirements:

NOTE BE ADVISED NEW LAWS FOR 2018 WILL BE RELEASED VERY SOON. Tennessee state shipping regulations state that all pilot cars/escort vehicles must display either both bumpers or 1 roof mounted “OVERSIZE LOAD” or “WIDELOAD” sign (which ever is applicable) visible from both the front and rear of the vehicle and only displayed while working. Sign must be at least 5′ long but no greater than 7′ and 12″ in height but no greater than 18″ in height, yellow in color with black letters no less than 8″ in height but no more than 10″ in height and lettering must be a minimum of 1.4″ in width.  Vehicle must be equipped with 2 horizontally mounted rotating (if rotating 8″ base is required) (or strobe) amber colored flashing or strobe light which must be visible from a 360 degree angle from a minimum of 500 feet. Vehicles must be equipped with a CB radio or 2-way communication device and be in constant communication with all parties assigned to the movement.

It is our opinion that pilot cars also have a minimum of the additional items but not required:  2 – 5 pound fire extinguishers type A, B and C, a paddle sign with the word “STOP” on one side and “SLOW” on the other with dimensions of no less than 18″ in diameter with a minimum of 6″ letters. A red safety colored flag with a handle no less than 18″ square, 3 reflective emergency road triangles or 18″ traffic cones, 8 burning road flares, 2 OVERSIZE LOAD banners (yellow with black lettering) and a safety colored (red, orange, yellow or lime green) vest, jacket or shirt (used while directing traffic). 2021 Nevada State Shipping Regulations

Do I need a trucking permit? Legal load limits.

Nevada maximum load limits until a trucking permit is required:

Length: 75 feet maximum overall. Maximum trailer length is 53 feet.
Width: 8 feet 6 inches.
Height: 14 feet.
Weight: GVW 80,000 pounds. Single axle 20,000 pounds, tandem axles 34,000 pounds, tridem axles 42,000 pounds. Steer axle maximums require some math obviously. Here’s what the NVDOT says about it: “The maximum weight per tire, measured by pounds per inch of tire width, is 600 pounds per inch for the steering axle and 500 pounds per inch for all other axles, not to exceed the axle rating”. We say good luck with that, 12,400 pounds average???
Overhang: The maximum overhang allowed is 10 feet which overall must NOT exceed the maximum length of 75 feet.

Routine oversize and heavy-haul trucking permits.

These maximum dimensions/weights are considered routine oversize or heavy-haul trucking permits in NV:

Length: There really isn’t any routine maximum length. It all depends on proposed route and the state. After 105 feet in length it can get complicated.
Width: 17 feet. However some routes are restricted, see notes below;
Height: 16 feet.
Weight: Single axles 20,000 pounds, tandem axles 46,725 pounds, tridem axles 58,000 (to 59,000 see below) pounds. Determined by bridge formula, desired route, tire size and axle spacings especially for singles, tandems, tridums and quadem axles. Gross weights are: 5 axles 92,000 pounds with 70 feet minimum axle spacings, 6 axles 96,000 pounds with 70 feet minimum of axle spacings, 7 axles 101,000 pounds with 70 feet minimum of axles spacings, 8 axles 106,000 pounds with 70 feet minimum of axles spacings.
Overhang: No more than 15’ combined total but you want to check with them to make absolute sure as routing can effect this limit.
Notes: For weight restrictions Nevada has different routes marked. Choose the map you need for the entire state, western, eastern and southern restricted areas. You can also view a list. For purple, orange and green areas. Also, restrictions for width and weight are in effect on the following routes: route map, route list. Also note to get the extra 1,000 pounds as noted above (59,000 pounds on tridem configurations) you are allowed to use up to 2 tridem configurations only. Any additional tridem axle configurations will max out at 51,000 pounds. If you have tridem configurations on your tractor that will be counted as 1 of the 2. However, the distance between the steer axle and the center tridum axle must be a minimum of 18 feet. It is possible to to exceed this within reason but is reviewed case by case by the NVDOT permitting office.

Nevada superloads.

Requirements for extra-heavy or over-dimensional (superloads) in NV:

Nevada is picky about weights and heights. Rather than attempting to illustrate a list of items that may not apply we suggest if your shipment does not fall within the set maximums listed above it’s more than likely going to be considered a superload by NVDOT. The permitting process for superloads is different than the normal oversize or over-weight trucking permits in Nevada and must be fully drafted by the company or person requesting the permit. NOTE: any special purpose or special needs loads that are outside of the normal permitting parameters will classify as a superload.

Legal travel times for oversize and heavy-haul loads.

Travel times and restrictions:

Remember to refer to your actual permit for travel times and restrictions. For Nevada daylight travel hours are defined as one half hour before sunrise to one half hour after sunset with some restrictions;  under 12 feet wide, 110 feet long or 15 feet tall may also travel during night hours and on weekends as long as you are not on I-80 between Sparks, NV and the CA state border or on I-15 between Las Vegas and the CA state border. There are no weekday curfews for any cities and if your load is under 12 feet wide, 100 feet long or 15 feet tall you may travel on holiday. However, if your load is in excess of these dimensions  holiday travel restrictions are on the following days: New Years day, Memorial day, Independence day, Labor day, Thanksgiving day and Christmas day. If a large event is predicted to create dense traffic they may restrict that date as well, ie: state fairs, etc.

When pilot cars or escort vehicles are required.

Heavy-haul or oversize loads may be required to be accompanied by a escort vehicle or pilot car if:

2 lane roads:

  • 12 feet requires 1 pilot car or escort.
  • 14 feet requires 1 pilot car and 1 escort.

Height:

  • if over 16 feet and 6 inches in height you will be required to have 1 pilot car equipped with a height pole.

DETAILED REFERENCE

Length: If shipment is over 110 feet in length you are required to have 1 pilot car behind the shipment.
Width: If your shipment is over 12′ wide on up to a 3 lane road you are required to have 1 escort vehicle in the front of your shipment. If over 14′ wide on up to a 3 lane road you are required to have 1 escort in the front and 1 pilot car in the rear of the load.  If over 14′ wide on a 4 lane road you are required to have 1 rear escort. If over 16′ you are required to have 1 front pilot car and 1 rear escort on 4 lane and all other roads.
Height: Loads that are in excess of 15′ 6″ are required to have a front high pole pilot car at all times.
Weight: Pilot cars and escorts are usually not required on shipments over weight that are able to maintain the minimum posted speed requirements. If you are not able to maintain minimum speeds you will be required to have a minimum of a rear escort vehicle if travelling in urban and some rural areas.
Overhang: If in excess of 25 feet you will be required to have a minimum of 1 pilot car.
Notes: Some routes are completely restricot car.ted. If in the Hoover dam vicinity shipments are not permitted for anything over 10 feet in width but if 10 feet will require 1 pilot car and 1 escort.

Pilot car and escort vehicle requirements, certifications.

In order to operate a pilot car or escort vehicle in the state of Nevada you are required to have a minimum of the following:

First of all the state of Nevada requires that all pilot and escort vehicles be certified. If you are officially certified by another state then this is recognized by the state of Nevada as valid certification and you may operate within the state however, in order to have an amber light mounted to ANY vehicle you must first obtain a permit from the state which costs $2.00 per vehicle, per year. You can do that online by clicking here.
A pilot car or an escort vehicle is required to be equipped with a strobing or flashing amber light that is visible from a distance of no less than 500′ in daylight and from all 360 degree angles, mounted to the roof and above signs. The light must be a minimum of 50 candle power and if it is a rotating light must have a lens of no less than 5″ in diameter with a flash count or not less than 50 per minute. Any vehicle used for this purpose must be no less than 60″ in width, with a wheelbase of a minimum of 95″ with no more than 2 axles and a manufacturer’s gross weight of no more than 16,000 pounds.
Each vehicle must be equipped with a two way radio that is in constant contact with/to all parties involved in the shipment, 5 pound (minimum) fire extinguisher, 3 bi-directional 18″ road triangles, 1 stop/slow sign with 5′ pole handle, 1 hard hat, 1 reflective safety vest, a copy of the ANSI/ISEA manual which can be ordered online here for $30. Drivers must be a minimum of 18 years of age, have a valid drivers license, and must be flagger/flagman “capable or carrying out flagging responsibilities” (we strongly suggest a flagger safety class) of controlling traffic, wearing a approved safety yellow-green safety jacket or vest and equipped with a red flag and a stop/slow paddle of no less than 18″. Each vehicle should be equipped with proper signs that specify “oversize”,  “oversize load” or “wideload” as well as “long load” with black letters a minimum of 10″ in height with a letter thickness of no less than 1 5/8″ on a yellow background which are removed or covered while not in work transit mode. Pilot car and escort vehicles must have a placard on each side of the vehicle with the companies name and phone number clearly visible from a distance of no less than 50′.
Operators of pilot cars and escort vehicles will maintain a reasonable distance from the shipment which all depends on weather, traffic, road conditions and the speed you are travelling with reasonable distance defined by how much time it takes for the shipment driver to recognize your indications to stop, slow or pass as necessary.

Shipment, truck and trailer markings.

Truck, trailer and shipment required signs, banners and flags:

All trucking companies that are hauling oversize and overweight shipments must have a amber colored strobing or flashing light affixed to the top of the tractor trailer cab that is visible 360 degrees from a minimum distance of 500′. Signs that state the nature of the shipment; “oversize load” or “wideload” signs in the overall front and rear of the shipment. Signs will be no less than 7′ in width and 18″ in height with black lettering no less than 10″ in height with a lettering thickness of no less than 1 5/8″ thick on a yellow background. Signs must be mounted securely and free of any dirt or debris. Warning flags are to be used only in daylight hours and must be florescent orange in color with a minimum size distance of 18″ from one corner to the next corner and be placed at the outer most corners of the shipment as well as on any protrusions. IF the shipment is permitted to travel during night hours must have 2 constant display amber lights placed at the very most front extreme of the shipment,  two amber steady burning lights on the outer (side) center of the shipment and two red steady lit lights on the outer most rear of the shipment. THIS INCLUDES OVER-WEIGHT LOADS MOVING AT NIGHT.

2020 Truck Safety

2020 Truck Safety Sting Results.

We’ve got a lot of our drivers and trucks out of service. No exact numbers this year yet.

The numbers are in for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual International Road check enforcement sting – held June 4-6, 2019. During these three days a total of 67,072 commercial vehicles were inspected in the USA and Canada. 12,019 trucks inspected (17.9% of them) were placed out of service due to violations and 2,784 drivers (4.2% of the trucks) were placed out of service for driver related issues.

The #1 violation was brake related issues. For the driver related issues the leading violation was hours of service.

Out-of-service vehicle conditions starting with the highest:

Road safety enforcement results.

The CVSA said 3,851 commercial motor vehicles transporting hazardous materials/dangerous goods (HM/DG) were inspected and 527 vehicles were found to have out-of-service conditions, which is a 13.7% out-of-service rate for HM/DG vehicles. There also were 52 HM/DG drivers placed out-of-service – a 1.4% out-of-service rate for HM/DG drivers.

Each year, special emphasis is placed on a certain category of violations. This year’s focus was placed on steering and suspension. Inspectors found 408 steering (2.5% of all out-of-service vehicle violations) and 703 suspension issues (4.3% of all out-of-service vehicle violations) during the International Roadcheck Enforcement sting.

During the three International Roadcheck Enforcement days the inspectors primarily conducted one of three inspection levels:

The North American Standard (NAS) Level I Inspection is a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of driver operating requirements and the vehicles overall mechanical fitness.
The NAS Level II Inspection typically includes everything that can be inspected without physically getting underneath the vehicle.
The NAS Level III Inspection is a review of driver requirements such as the drivers license, documentation (vehicle and load), log books, seat belt usage, etc.

It would be nice if we were given some numbers for the percentage of the trucks that serviced the OS/HH industry. Either way one must admit these numbers aren’t a good reflection on our industry overall and these numbers can’t be ignored – especially when the main issue involved are the breaks. We couldn’t also help but to note the amount of violations for incorrect drivers license or suspension. One has to wonder if a insurance claim had to be filed for whatever reason if it would be valid (at all) since the actual driver of the truck wasn’t supposed to be behind the steering wheel in the first place. This is dangerous territory for everyone involved including the public.

Interesting fact as well:

3,085 actual truck driver jobs have been lost due to companies going out of business so far in 2019.

Saskatchewan Frost Laws

2020 Saskatchewan winter frost/spring that laws and seasonal weight restrictions.

The winter/spring season frost law restrictions will again be in in effect for many roadways in the Province of Saskatchewan this year according to information provided by the the provincial Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure. Typically, seasonal (spring) frost law restrictions that take effect in March.

Spring load restrictions on affected highways: The maximum load on steering axles is 10 kg per millimeter (560 lbs. per inch) width of tire (manufacturer’s stamped dimensions), to a maximum of 3 000 kg (6,612 lbs.) on each wheel but to a maximum of 5,500 kg (12 120 lbs.) on the steering axle; except for straight trucks on primary highways which are allowed up to a maximum of 7,250 kg (15,983 lbs.) on the steering axle with the appropriate tire size.

Maximum loads on all other wheels will be limited to 6.25 kg/mm (350 lbs. per inch) width of tire to a maximum loading of 1,650 kg per wheel (3,636 lbs.)

Maximum gross axle weights and tire sizes.

Colder temperatures during the winter months help freeze and strengthen roads. As a result more weight can be transported on provincial highways without damaging the road. This is a benefit to the trucking community.

The winter weight period that allows additional weight typically runs from November 16 through March 14. However, if weather remains mild the program may be postponed because without sufficient freezing, extra weight can damage pavement and the road beneath.

Winter Weights will not apply in the southwest area of the province until December 1 and will be removed on the last day of February due to historically milder climatic conditions.

Municipal roads are the responsibility of each rural municipality, who can set out their own weight limits. Weights can be restricted at any time by Minister’s order.

Saskatchewan is a large province with considerable difference in climate in the north and the south. The new change takes into account the climatic differences in the north and the south of the province while also maintaining the original intent of providing primary weight access for economic activities. In the north of the province, the annual weight increase on the 9-month primary highways will be same as before, from July 1 to March 31 of the following year. In the south of the province, the annual weight increase on the 9-month primary highways will occur earlier, from June 15 to March 15 of the following year. This change will help to sustain road conditions in the south, where spring thaw occurs earlier.
