Peak Season Rates

What is the meaning of Peak Season Rates?

Also known as peak season surcharges, peak season rates are the temporary charges imposed on shippers by carriers during the peak season. Peak seasons are common, starting mid-August until October, when the freight volumes are highest. This is one of the year’s busiest seasons when retailers want their shipments delivered as early as possible. However, the start and end of the peak season might vary slightly every year. This is one of the busiest times for carriers.

Peak Season Rates - In The Field

The peak season surcharges (PSS)are applied to cater to the increased operational costs during such seasons. Generally, carriers working at near full or full freight need extra resources, including automation and seasonal labor, to avoid unnecessary delays. This way, carriers can balance the increased costs while still maintaining the service standards that their clients expect to receive. Some parcels commonly affected by peak season include rural deliveries, large and wide loads, and priority service levels.
