Oversize Load Legal Travel Times in Virginia

Travel times and restrictions:

  • One-half hour before sunrise and one-half hour after sunset rule applies to Virginia state shipping regulations. 
  • Shipments under 12 feet wide, 14 feet high, and 115,000 pounds gross weight may travel on Saturday until noon.  
  • No travel is permitted on Sundays as per Virginia state shipping regulations.  
  • If a shipment is overweight only, then you may travel 24/7.  
  • The largely populated cities do not allow oversized travel during the peak hours of 7 am – 9 am and 4 pm – 6 pm, except for overweight or over-height shipments.  
  • Travel is not permitted on the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. The permit office is also closed on these holidays.
