Pilot and Escort Car Requirements in Delaware

The requirements for pilot cars vary depending on the route taken and which dimensions exceed the legal limit. Pilot cars must lead or follow loads at certain set distances to maximize the reaction time afforded to the hauling vehicle driver and other drivers. Permits may require additional escort vehicles due to factors like terrain and weather. The standard requirements for pilot cars include the following;

  • Length Loads over 100 feet long require one escort vehicle; those over 110 feet long require two escort cars, one front and one rear. For loads over 120 feet long, you require two civilian escorts plus a state police escort.
  • Width: One escort car is required for loads over 13 feet wide. Those over 14 feet wide require two escorts, one lead, and one rear escort. For over 15 feet wide, you require two civilian escorts plus police escorts.
  • Height: Loads over 15 feet high require two escorts, one at the front and one at the rear. From 17 feet 6 inches and higher, you require two civilian escorts plus a state police escort. Completed route surveys are mandatory when applying for a permit for load heights of 15 feet or more.
  • Weight Loads over 120,000 pounds require two civilian escorts and state police escorts. A bridge survey is also mandatory for permit issuance.

Pilot Car Certifications in Delaware

Pilot and escort vehicles must be single-unit, non-permitted vehicles that are at least the size of a compact car. An escort vehicle cannot be attached to any other vehicle during operation. Other requirements for pilot cars in Delaware are:

  • Escort vehicles can only escort one oversized load at a time. Conditions on high-volume highways or ones with lane widths less than 12 feet may be more restrictive.
  • An escort vehicle should be behind an overwidth load on multilane highways and in front of an overwidth load on two-lane highways.
  • Escort vehicles must maintain visual contact with the escorted load and communicate two-way via a CB radio with the hauling vehicle’s driver.
  • Escort vehicles should have roof-mounted “OVERSIZE LOAD” signs on both sides of the front and rear. The signs must be at least 5′ x 12″ and written in black letters 8″ high on a yellow background.

Route Surveying in Delaware

To issue a permit, the Delaware Department of Transportation requires route surveys for overheight loads. Route surveys must be conducted in marked pilot cars and signed by the pilot car drivers before transport begins. Route surveys also allow us to identify utilities and railway crossings along the route. State regulations require that oversized loads obtain consent letters from owners of overhead utilities and sometimes have a company representative present. The data from these surveys is also essential for route planning. Some of the best routes for oversize transport in Delaware include

  • Interstate 95 (I-95) runs through Delaware and connects it to neighboring states.
  • Interstate Delaware Route 1 is a toll road that connects the northern and southern parts of the state, ideal for transport to the coastal areas.
  • U.S. Route 13 – Running north-south is essential for moving over-dimensional loads through the state.
  • U.S. Route 40 – This route connects I-95 to the western part of the state.
  • Delaware Route 896 is vital for linking to various local roads.
