When Do I Need a Pilot Car or Escort Vehicle For My Florida Oversize Shipment?

Below are the dimensions guidelines for when you require a pilot car in Florida

  • Length: One rear pilot car is required if a shipment is over 95 feet long.
  • Width: If a shipment is over 12 feet wide, you must have one pilot car or escort vehicle. Some routes may require two pilot cars or escort vehicles. If a shipment is over 14 feet wide, two pilot cars or escort vehicles will be required. If a shipment is more than 15 feet, you may be required to have a police escort in addition to a minimum of 2 pilot cars or escort vehicles.
  • Height: If a shipment is over 14 feet 6 inches tall, you will need one escort vehicle. Shipments over 16 feet in height need two pilot cars or escort vehicles. Shipments over 15 feet in height will require a written route survey.
  • Overhang: Rear overhang up to 20 feet past the center of the rear axle (or dolly) may require one pilot car or escort vehicle.

The following pilot car certification programs are accepted in Florida: Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. Here are the escort vehicle requirements:

  • An “escort vehicle” or “pilot car” must weigh more than 2,000 pounds with a gross vehicle rating of less than 26,000 pounds.

Route Surveying in Florida

To conduct a route survey, a pilot car specially marked for the process travels the entirety of the roadway an oversized load will take. When validating the route, data is amassed on overhead utilities, height clearances, and bridge weight and speed requirements.  Florida mandates route surveys for loads exceeding 15 feet high or 16 feet wide. The pilot car driver must sign off the complete route survey certifying that the load meets route clearances. Additionally, a detailed list of any applicable exclusions is included. When choosing the appropriate route for your load, we also consider any planned road closures, roadblocks, and traffic density. Some of the Florida highways suitable for oversized load travel include:

  • Interstate 10 (I-10): I-10 is a major east-west route for oversized transport.
  • Interstate 75 (I-75): This highway runs north-south of the state.
  • Interstate 95 (I-95) is a significant interstate along the eastern coast.
  • Interstate 4 (I-4) connects Tampa and Orlando and is suitable for oversized loads traveling through central Florida.
  • U.S. Route 301: This route is frequented for moving oversized loads in the northern part of the state.
