When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Kansas?

Heavy-haul or oversized loads may be required to be accompanied by an escort vehicle or pilot car if:

  • Length: If more than 90 feet overall, you must have one rear/chase pilot car or escort vehicle.
  • Width: Loads over 14 feet wide, one front escort and one rear. On roads with four lanes or less, you may eliminate the rear escort for an amber light on the cab and rear or load.  The light must be at least 2 feet high from the pavement and no more than 8 feet from the pavement.  However, this does not apply to superloads on roads over four lanes. Turnpike restrictions: At least one escort vehicle is required to accompany the movement of loads more than 14 feet wide.
  • Height: If over 17 feet tall, you need a high pole front escort.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Kansas

At Wide Load Shipping, route surveys are pivotal in meeting our customers’ deadlines. Several factors can affect oversized transport, including weather conditions, heavy traffic, curfews, and road work. Route surveys allow us to identify and include these factors in our route planning procedures. On the legal side, route surveys help acquire permits and police escorts. Oversized loads can only use the routes indicated on the permit, and any changes may necessitate a fresh permit. It is thus essential that the most suitable route is chosen.

Some highways to consider for oversized loads in Kansas include;

  • I-70: The primary east-west route in the state.
  • I-35: A major route running north-south of the state.
  • K-10: Connects Lawrence and Johnson County.
