Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Services in Louisiana

Wide Load Shipping offers dependable pilot car services in Louisiana. Our services are trustworthy and available in all 50 states. Each state has unique regulations on oversized and overweight loads, which makes cross-state movements tricky. Our pilot cars meet the regulations in every state, and our legal department ensures your load meets them. Oversized loads require permits, insurance, and route surveys, all of which we handle. The transparency of our services is unmatched, with no hidden charges, and we offer our clients free detailed price estimates. Pilot vehicles are indispensable in ensuring oversized loads can safely use public roads. They travel ahead or behind oversized loads to warn other motorists and ensure they maintain a safe distance from the load. Our services are available for overweight and oversized loads of every type. Examples include bridge spans, combine harvesters, overweight containers, and large boats.

When are Pilot Cars Required in Louisiana?

Despite the state’s standardized escort vehicle requirements for over-dimensional loads, some routes and cities impose extra requirements. Louisiana’s standard requirements are;

  • Length: Loads over 90 feet long require one escort, while loads over 125โ€ฒ  require state police escort on top of civilian escorts.
  • Width: Loads over 12โ€ฒ wide require one escort vehicle. Loads over 16โ€ฒ wide require civilian and state police escort on 2-lane or multi-lane highways.
  • Height: Loads over 15โ€ฒ-10โ€ณ high may require a height pole off the interstates. For loads over 16โ€ฒ-6โ€ณ, escort vehicle requirements depend on the routes.

NOTE: In New Orleans, a state police escort is necessary if you are not traveling on the Interstate. The Length is over 90โ€ฒ,  the Width is over 12โ€ฒ, and the Height is over 13โ€ฒ-6โ€ณ.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements

Pilot car and escort vehicles in the state have to be registered by Louisiana Revised Statutes or Reciprocal Agreements and comply with the following rules;

  • In the state, closed vans, buses, campers, motor homes, and motor-driven cycles cannot serve as escort vehicles.
  • Pilot cars require two “OVERSIZE LOAD” signs measuring 7โ€ณ long x 18โ€ณ tall with black lettering 10โ€ณ high and 1.5โ€ณ thick on a yellow background. The signs should be available but are not required to be mounted on the escort vehicle.
  • The vehicles must have a regulation-compliant  360-degree, amber emergency warning lamp that can be strobe, bar, revolving, or stationary. Where dome-type lamps are used, they should have a lens measuring a minimum of 9โ€ณ in diameter and 4โ€ณ in Height.
  • Two red or orange fluorescent flags, 18โ€ณx18โ€ณ,  are required to be mounted atop the vehicle, in line with the warning lamps, at a 45-degree angle and should not extend more than 6โ€ณ to either side of the vehicle.
  • All pilot cars and escort vehicles must be equipped with a 2-way CB radio for constant communication with the load.
  • Both front doors must have identification signs showing the vehicle’s name, address, phone number, and city of the company or owner.
  • Other requirements include two rear-view mirrors, four 15-minute burning flares, two red or orange fluorescent hand-held flags, four 18โ€ณx18โ€ณ red or orange fluorescent flags, and one 10 lb BC dry or equivalent fire extinguisher.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Louisiana

Route surveys are a legal requirement and essential in avoiding accidents and unforeseen delays once transport commences. At Wide Load Shipping, we are committed to meeting our customer’s deadlines. Route surveys are, hence, a vital tool for route planning and identifying the paperwork needed for each proposed route. During the process, we aim to identify tight turns or narrow sections, overhead power lines and traffic signals, railway crossings, and the height clearances of underpasses and bridges. The law requires us to inform railway authorities when an oversized load is going through a crossing so they can adjust train schedules to avoid accidents and traffic interruptions. In the case of police escorts, we must give the state police department sufficient notice and compensate them for the services. Some of the ideal highways for heavy hauls in Louisiana are;

  • Interstate 10 (I-10):  A major east-west route across southern Louisiana, connecting New Orleans, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette.
  • Interstate 20 (I-20): Runs through northern Louisiana.
  • Interstate 49 (I-49): Joining north and south of the state, connecting Alexandria to Shreveport.
  • US Route 61: Commonly referred to as the Great River Road, this route runs along the Mississippi River.
  • US Route 190: A highway crossing Louisiana from east to west.
