Our pilot cars are licensed, insured, and piloted by experienced drivers. Our customer service is always available and will answer your queries regarding oversized loads in Michigan. When are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Michigan?

Permits stipulate the number of pilot cars needed. In Michigan, permits are approved in one to ten days. Unless otherwise stated on the permit, the distance between a lead or chase pilot car should be 500 feet.

Heavy-haul or oversized loads may require to be accompanied by an escort vehicle or pilot car if:

  • Length: Loads 90 to 100 feet long require one escort vehicle on the rear. Loads over 100 feet long require a rear pilot car or “chase” escort vehicle.
  • Width: Loads over 12 feet wide on four lanes require one rear escort/pilot car. A lead or front pilot car is required on a 2-lane highway for loads over 12 feet wide. One Front and one rear pilot car/escort are required for loads over 14 feet wide.
  • Height: Loads over 14 feet and 5 inches require a pilot car with a height pole. Loads over 15 feet in height will require a rear chase escort vehicle and one lead pilot car equipped with a height pole.
  • Overhang: If over 15 feet, one rear escort is required.
  • Weight: If the truck can maintain the minimum speeds, no pilot cars are required unless the load is excessive or supercharged.

Pilot Cars/Escort Vehicle Certifications in Michigan

Pilot car or escort vehicle mandatory operator certifications and vehicle requirements in Michigan:

  • In Michigan, a vehicle must be a pickup truck or passenger vehicle to qualify as a pilot or escort vehicle.
  • They must have at least one rotating or flashing amber light mounted on the vehicle’s top.
  • Pilot and escort vehicles must also display one oversized load sign on their roofs or bumpers, 5′ x 1′, written in black letters no less than 8 inches tall on a yellow background.
  • All flashing, stroking, or rotating amber lights must be roof-mounted and visible from at least 500 feet away.
  • In addition, we strongly suggest that pilot cars and escort vehicles have the minimum federally suggested safety equipment.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Michigan

Wide Load Shipping conducts route surveys to optimize logistics for each load we ship. Route surveying involves assessing various factors to ensure safe and efficient transportation and to comply with permitting regulations. We identify railway crossings as they require extra precaution and paperwork to prevent delays in rail traffic and transport operations. Overhead power lines, signs, and traffic signals may also need adjusting to allow overheight loads to flow through. In such cases, we inform the owners and cover the costs involved. We also consider travel restrictions when planning, particularly in urban areas and peak traffic hours. Choosing the ideal route for your load is the best way to guarantee project deadlines are met. Some routes to consider in Michigan are;

  • I-75: Runs north-south of the state and connects to several key cities.
  • I-94: Runs east-west, providing access to the southern part of the state.
  • I-69: Connects to I-75 and I-94.
  • US-23: Runs along the eastern side of the state.
  • US-131: Runs north-south in the western part of the state.
