Nebraska Pilot Car Services

Are you moving an oversized or overweight load within or to Nebraska? Wide Load Shipping has you covered with reliable pilot car services. Our services are easy to access, even on short notice, and our 24/7 customer support is always ready to assist you. We perform route surveys to determine the necessary permits and paperwork for your load, which we also handle. Nebraska oversize permits are valid for ten days and are required before entering the state. Every state has unique regulations on over-dimensional loads, and failure to comply attracts significant fines and penalties. Pilot cars are necessary to maintain public safety on roads and to guide load drivers through difficult-to-navigate road sections. Our services are easy to customize and fit any oversized load. Some of the loads we regularly escort include large tractors, overweight dozers, aircraft parts, construction materials, and farm machinery. When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Nebraska?

Heavy-haul or oversized loads may  require to be accompanied by an escort vehicle or pilot car if:

  • Length: Loads 90โ€™ long require one escort on the rear. Over 100โ€™ needs a rear pilot car.
  • Width: The DOT can require a pilot car for anything over 8โ€™ 6โ€. Sometimes, a lightbar can be used instead of a pilot car. Loads over 12 wide on four lanes require one rear escort. A front pilot car is required on 2-lane highways for loads over 12โ€™ wide. Front and rear escorts are required for loads over 14โ€™ wide. A front escort with a height pole is required for 14โ€™ 6โ€ and over.
  • Height: loads over 14โ€™ 6โ€ need a front pilot car and may need a height pole depending on the route.
  • Overhang: If over 15โ€™, one rear escort is needed.

NOTE: Allow 1 to 10 days for permits to be approved. Maximum speeds are 45 MPH if there are four or more lanes and 35 MPH if there are less than 4 lanes. Also, read the travel restrictions below.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Nebraska

Route surveys are done to map out the features of a route and check for its suitability for a particular oversized load. The dimensions of a load influence the routes it can be permitted to take. Nebraska is a land of rugged terrain, which can limit the options for over-dimensional loads. Our experts at Wide Load Shipping go to great lengths to ensure reliable route surveys. We take note of railway crossings, bridge weight limits, height clearances, overhead power lines, traffic signals, and signs. The dimensions of the road are also essential considerations to reduce impact on traffic flow and to determine the number and type of required escort vehicles. For routes that call for police escorts, we make arrangements with the state departments and cover their costs. Nebraska has several highways that are regularly used for oversized loads. These include;

  • I-80: Runs east-west across the state.
  • I-76: Connects I-80 to Colorado.
  • I-29: Runs north-south along the eastern edge of Nebraska
  • U.S. 34: An East-west route across southern Nebraska.
  • U.S. 75: Runs north-south, connecting to Omaha and the southern border.
  • U.S. 281: A north-south route through central Nebraska.
