When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Nevada?

Heavy-haul or oversized loads may be required to be accompanied by an escort vehicle or pilot car if:

  • Length: Over 105 feet requires an escort to both 2-lane and 4-lane roads.
  • Width: On 2-lane roads, loads measuring 12 feet require one pilot car or escort, 14 feet require one front and one rear escort, and 16 feet require three total pilot and escort vehicles. Loads 17 feet wide will require a review, probably requiring one front pilot car, one rear escort, and one police escort. On 4-lane roads, loads measuring 14 feet require one pilot car or escort, 16 feet require one front pilot car and one escort, while 17 feet requires one front pilot car, one rear escort, and one police escort.
  • Height: If you are over 16 feet 6 inches tall, you must have one pilot car equipped with a height pole.
  • Weight: Pilot cars and escorts are usually optional on overweight shipments that can maintain the minimum posted speed requirements. If you cannot maintain minimum speeds, you must have a minimum of a rear escort vehicle if traveling in urban and some rural areas.
  • Overhang: If the overhang is more than 25 feet, you will need a minimum of 1 pilot car.

NOTE: Some routes are entirely restricted. In the Hoover Dam, vicinity shipments are not permitted for anything over 10 feet in width, but if 10 feet, it will require one pilot car and one escort.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Nevada

Wide Load Shipping offers customers custom route solutions to mitigate the risks involved in oversized transports. We conduct route surveys for each load to determine the most ideal route and potential detours should the main one be compromised. The process involves driving down a route in a marked pilot car to identify railway crossings, overhead infrastructure, turnpikes, and height clearances. We also take note of planned road closures or mass traffic events which might lead to travel restrictions. Oversized loads are restricted from traveling without special permits during most national holidays, weekends, and nighttime. Some ideal routes for heavy hauls in Nevada include;

  • Interstate 80 (I-80)
  • Interstate 15 (I-15)
  • U.S. Route 95
  • U.S. Route 6
  • Nevada State Route 431 (Mt. Rose Highway)
  • Nevada State Route 306
