When Are Pilot Cars Required in New Mexico?

  • Width: Pilot cars are required for shipments that exceed 14โ€ฒ in width and can be even lower depending on the route you wish to travel.  Pilot cars are required for loads exceeding 14โ€ฒ 6โ€ณ on restricted highways. If the width of the load exceeds 20โ€ฒ wide, you will be required to have a police escort and flag person certified to control traffic.
  • Length: Shipments over 90โ€ฒ in length overall may require a pilot car. If your shipment is over 110โ€ฒ, you must have two pilot cars (1 front and one rear).

Pilot Car Certifications Required in New Mexico

At the New Mexico DOT port of entry, pilot cars (escort vehicles) must be inspected for certification by the New Mexico DOT while operating in their state. The driver is  required to show the following equipment and documentation in   or on the vehicle for inspection purposes:

  • The vehicle’s tires must be in excellent condition. The wheelbase must be at least 100โ€ณ inches and have a rated capacity of no more than 1 and 1/2 tons.
  • Two-way radio or CB radio units can transport well over 10 miles minimum.
  • Two amber flashing or strobing lights on the top outer edges of the vehicle are visible 360 degrees from a distance of no less than 500โ€ฒ. Headlamps are required to be on as well when working.
  • Escort vehicles must display at least 1 “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign. This sign must have a yellow background with minimum dimensions of 5โ€ฒ in width and 12โ€ณ in height with black letter thickness no less than 1โ€ณ thick. It is best if mounted on top but can be mounted to the rear if chasing or front if leading.
  • Have a minimum of 2 fluorescent orange-colored safety flags no less than 12โ€ณ in length on any side.
  • The following safety equipment is necessary: a fire extinguisher with a type A, B, and C rating and a minimum of 2 1/2 pounds (5 or larger is suggested), three reflective road triangles, eight ignitable road flares, and a safety-colored vest or jacket.
  • The vehicle must display the company name, address, and contact information on both sides. New Mexico does not allow logo shapes that resemble law enforcement or vehicles.
  • A certificate of insurance meets the minimum requirements for the New Mexico DOT, which are $50,000, $100,000, and $25,000.

The New Mexico DOT inspections are annual, and the validity duration is determined by the expiration date on the insurance certificate or one year, whichever is first.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in New Mexico

Wide Load Shipping understands the sensitivity of client deadlines and invests extra resources into route planning. Route planning allows us to identify any events or obstacles that may delay the movement of your oversized load. Heavy traffic, bad weather, road construction, and noncompliance with regulations are all things that could hinder the movement of an oversized load. Road surveying involves scouting a route in a pilot car to identify height clearances, bridge weight limits, overhead infrastructure, and anything that can hinder your oversized load. This data is also crucial in obtaining the permits and paperwork required by New Mexico’s law. Some of the best routes for over-dimensional loads in the state include:

  1. Interstate 40 (I-40): An east-west corridor through Albuquerque and Santa Rosa.
  2. Interstate 25 (I-25): Linking Las Cruces and Santa Fe.
  3. U.S. Route 60: Joining small towns from east to west.
  4. U.S. Route 70: Joining Las Cruces and Roswell.
  5. U.S. Route 85: Cutting through from the Texas border and the southern eastern region.
