When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Ohio?

Heavy haul or oversized loads are required to be accompanied by an escort vehicle or pilot car if:

  • Length: For loads 90 feet combined overall length, a pilot car should lead on two lanes and chase on four or more lanes.
  • Width: 2 lane roads: Loads 13 feet wide require one pilot car, 14 feet, and 6 inches require one pilot car and one escort vehicle. Sixteen feet requires one pilot car, one escort vehicle, and one police escort. Four-lane roads: Loads 13 feet require one pilot car, 14 feet and 6 inches require one pilot car and one escort, 16 feet, and 6 inches require one pilot car and one escort, and on some routes, one police escort.
  • Height: Loads 14 feet and 6 inches high require one pilot car with a high pole. Loads 14 feet and 10 inches high and over require one pilot car with a height pole and one rear chase. Some routes may require one police escort to accompany them.

Pilot Car Certifications and Requirements in Ohio

The Ohio Department of Transportation requires the following certifications and requirements for pilot cars (escort vehicles):

  • The Ohio DOT mandates that pilot cars and escort vehicles operating in Ohio have an amber light mounted on the vehicle’s roof. The amber light must strobe or flash and be visible from a 360-degree angle at a distance of at least 500′.
  • The vehicle is required to have a single roof-mounted sign or a front/rear sign (depending on whether it is operating as a lead or chase vehicle) that is no less than five ′ in length and 12′ in height with letters no less than 8″ in height and a minimum 1″ in thickness. The sign must be yellow with black lettering, and the nature of the loaded shipping must be stated, either “OVERSIZE LOAD” or  “WIDE LOAD.”
  • All pilot cars or escort vehicles must be equipped with a CB radio or powerful two-way communication device to constantly communicate with all parties working on the move.
  • Pilot car vehicles must have a handheld paddle sign that states “STOP” on one side and “SLOW” on the other to control traffic.
  • NOTE: It is only our professional opinion that pilot cars also have a minimum of the additional items but are not required:  2 – 5 pound fire extinguishers type A, B, and C. Additionally, a red safety-colored flag with a handle no less than 18″ square, three reflective emergency road triangles or 18″ traffic cones, eight burning road flares, 2 OVERSIZE LOAD banners (yellow with black lettering), and a safety colored (red, orange, yellow or lime green) vest, jacket or shirt (used while directing traffic) are required.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Ohio

Route surveying is required by law for some overheight loads, but it’s also an essential tool for route planning. It involves driving down a route in a pilot car to check for height clearances, bridge weight and speed limits, railway crossings, overhead utilities, and signage. When the survey was a DOT mandate, the results must be attached to the permit application. Wide Load Shipping handles scenarios where utilities need to be temporarily moved. We cover the costs involved and acquire representatives and consent letters from the utility companies. We consider travel restrictions when route planning to avoid delays and missed deadlines. Oversized loads cannot travel on national holidays, weekends, and during heavy traffic events. Some of the best routes for heavy hauls in Ohio are;

  • Interstate 70 (I-70): East-west route across central Ohio; connects with I-75, I-71, and I-77.
  • Interstate 71 (I-71): Diagonal route from Cincinnati to Cleveland.
  • Interstate 75 (I-75): North-south route from Cincinnati to Michigan.
  • Interstate 80/90 (Ohio Turnpike): East-west toll road in northern Ohio.
