Pennsylvania Pilot Car Services

Wide Load Shipping is the premier pilot car services provider in Pennsylvania. Our services are easily accessible and customizable to fit your projects. Our services are transparent, and our customer support is available around the clock to answer your questions and update you on your load status. Our legal experts also handle all the paperwork, including permits and utility company consent letters. We are committed to delivering your load on time and in perfect condition. The law requires all loads above the legal dimensions to have escort vehicles on public roads. These can be either civilian or law enforcement escorts. Pilot cars are essential as they warn other drivers that oversized loads occupying multiple lanes or going way below the speed limit pose a significant danger. We escort various over-dimensional loads in the state and tailor our services to accommodate unusual ones. Typical oversized loads include steel beams and pipes, manufactured home units, large dozers, and excavators. Book today for a free consultation.

When Are Pilot Cars Required in Pennsylvania?

If you max out over any of the below, you will be required to have at least one pilot car or escort vehicle:

  • Length: On all roads, if your shipment is over 90′ in length, you will require at least one rear (chase) pilot car.
  • Width: Two lanes over 13′ wide require one front and one rear pilot car/escort. Three lanes up to 13′ only require one chase.
  • Height: If your shipment is over 14′ 6″ in height, you will need a high-pole escort vehicle to transport it.
  • Weight: Not required as long as the truck can maintain minimum posted traffic speeds.
  • Overhang: This is decided on a case-by-case basis.

NOTE:

  • If the permit requires reduced speeds over bridges, one escort is necessary. If the permit requires a load to be the only vehicle on a bridge or occupy more than one lane of traffic, two escorts are required.
  • In Philadelphia, police escorts are required when a load is over and of the following: 11’5″ wide, 14′ high, 75′ long, 145,000 pounds.
  • Dozers with blades exceeding 12′ in width but less than 15 feet may be hauled when a traffic protector guide rail device is secured to the dozer. A detached blade cannot be hauled on an overweight load.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements in Pennsylvania

For a vehicle to conduct escort duties in Pennsylvania, it must comply with the following requirements:

  • Pilot cars and escort vehicles must display a clean, yellow warning sign on both the front and the rear of the vehicle, at least five ′ wide by 1′ high, with the words “OVERSIZE LOAD” in black letters at least 8″ high.
  • One or two flashing or revolving amber lights must continuously operate during movement. Additionally, headlamps and rear lamps should be illuminated during movement.
  • Pilot and escort vehicles must maintain visual and two-way radio contact with the load during movement.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Pennsylvania

Route surveying is required to establish if a roadway has dimensions sufficient for a specific oversized load to make it through. A pilot car drives the entire route to check for height clearances, bridge weight, speed limits, railway crossings, overhead utilities like signs, traffic signals, and powerlines. Our logistics specialists at Wide Load Shipping use this data to determine the ideal route and the required paperwork. Detailed route planning is essential to avoid unforeseen delays and meet our customer’s deadlines. We utilize specialized software to increase accuracy and flexibility. We inform rail companies when a load is going over a railway crossing to avoid accidents or interruptions to rail traffic. We also contact utility companies to arrange infrastructure relocation and cover the costs. The most ideal routes for oversize and heavy hauls in the state are:

  • I-76 (Pennsylvania Turnpike): A major east-west toll road across southern Pennsylvania.
  • I-80: A critical east-west corridor passing through the northern part of the state.
  • I-81: north-south route traversing central Pennsylvania.
  • I-83: Located in south-central Pennsylvania, joining Harrisburg to Baltimore, Maryland.
  • I-95: Runs along the southeastern corner.
  • I-79: cutting north-south through western Pennsylvania.
