South Carolina Pilot Car Services

Wide Load Shipping provides dependable, cost-effective pilot car services throughout South Carolina and its neighboring states. With a diverse landscape, including urban centers and rural highways, transporting over-dimensional loads in South Carolina presents unique challenges. Oversized loads in South Carolina require specific permits and may need police escorts, depending on the size. We acquire all necessary permits and special insurance, ensuring your heavy haul moves legally and does not incur fines and delays. In addition, we offer complimentary services such as towing trucks, cranes, and trailers to meet your needs. Pilot cars are crucial for maintaining safety on public roads, as they alert other drivers to wide loads that may take up multiple lanes or travel at lower speeds. Over the years, we have handled various oversized loads, from industrial machinery to large construction equipment and prefabricated structures like homes and bridge sections. When Are Pilot Cars Required in South Carolina?

A pilot car (escort vehicle) is required in the state when:

  • Length: Length is tricky in South Carolina. Call the DOT for the correct information.
  • Width: From 12โ€ฒ to 14โ€ฒ in width, two front pilot cars (escort vehicles) will be required on 2-lane roads. From 14โ€ฒ to 16โ€ฒ in width, one front and one rear pilot car (escort vehicle) will be required on all roads in the state. If your shipment is over 16โ€ฒ in width, you must have three pilot cars (escort vehicles): one front, one rear, and one police escort in the rear.
  • Height: It all depends on your routing. You could be required to have a pilot car (escort vehicle) with a height pole for the entire trip if you are 13โ€ฒ 7โ€ณ.
  • Weight: If you are approved for weight and maintain the minimum speed requirements, the South Carolina DOT permit office will probably not require you to have a pilot car (escort vehicle).
  • Overhang: If you’re pulling a 48โ€ฒ or a 53โ€ฒ extended trailer and have less than 15โ€ฒ of overhang, you can probably get away with flagging or amber lighting your shipment instead of a rear pilot car (escort vehicle). Anything over the 15โ€ฒ mark will require a pilot car (escort vehicle).

Pilot Car Certifications in South Carolina

The South Carolina DOT is pretty relaxed on pilot cars. The regulations include:

  • You must have the proper banner or sign stating “OVERSIZE LOAD” or “WIDE LOAD” prominently displayed on the top of the vehicle, in front of lead vehicles, or at the rear of chase vehicles.
  • You must have a flashing or strobing amber light on the vehicle’s top that is visible 360 degrees from a distance of at least 500โ€ฒ.
  • You must have a CB radio or 2-way communication device and communicate with all drivers working on your shipment.
  • You are required to have your headlights turned on while working.
  • Pilot cars should also have a minimum of the following additional items. Still, they are not required:  2 โ€“ 5 pound fire extinguishers type A, B, and C, a paddle sign with the word “STOP” on one side and “SLOW” on the other, dimensions of no less than 18โ€ณ in diameter, and a minimum of 6โ€ณ letters.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in South Carolina

South Carolina’s expansive road network and dense industrial hubs can present significant challenges when moving over-dimensional loads. Route surveying is essential for determining whether a road can safely handle an oversized load. A pilot car drives the route in advance, assessing height clearances, bridge weight limits, railway crossings, and overhead utilities such as power lines and traffic signals. At Wide Load Shipping, our logistics experts use this data to select the most efficient routes while ensuring all necessary paperwork is accounted for. We collaborate with rail and utility companies to minimize delays and prevent disruptions or accidents. We also make any necessary arrangements for moving infrastructure. Some suitable routes for over-dimensional loads in South Carolina include:

  • Interstate 95 (I-95) runs north-south through the eastern part of the state.
  • Interstate 26 (I-26): An east-west corridor through Charleston.
  • Interstate 20 (I-20): An east-west route passing through Columbia.
  • Interstate 77 (I-77): A north-south route connecting Columbia to North Carolina.
  • Interstate 85 (I-85): A vital highway for access to the Greenville-Spartanburg area and Georgia.
