Tennessee Pilot Car Services

When moving oversized loads in Tennessee, it’s always advisable to acquire professional services. Wide Load Shipping has, for over 15 years, provided dependable pilot car services in the state. Our services are comprehensive. Tennessee’s diverse terrain, ranging from the mountainous regions in the east to farmlands in the west, can make transporting over-dimensional loads difficult. Our drivers are experienced in navigating through narrow mountain passes, congested urban centers, and rural highways. Pilot cars lead or chase heavy hauls on public roads to warn other motorists and maintain public safety. Loads need different types and numbers of pilot cars depending on their dimensions. Some types of loads we ship include agricultural machinery, mobile homes, mining equipment, and large boats. Book our pilot car services in Tennessee today for a free consultation.

When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Tennessee?

Heavy-haul or oversized loads may be required to be accompanied by an escort vehicle or pilot car if:

  • Length: Loads 75 feet to 85 feet; may be permitted to use an amber strobe light. Loads 85 feet and over require one pilot car. Loads 120 feet long require two pilot cars.
  • Width: 2-lane roads: Loads 10 feet wide require one pilot car unless the pavement is 24 feet wide from the edge line (white line on the side) to the edge line. Loads 14 feet wide require one pilot car and one escort vehicle. 4-lane roads: Loads 12 feet 6 inches wide require one escort vehicle. Loads 14 feet and over require one pilot car and one escort vehicle.
  • Height: Loads 15 feet require a pilot car with a height pole.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Tennessee

Large parts of Tennessee and the Gulf Coastal Plain are flat, allowing most of the state highways to be straight. It eases the movement of oversized loads, but route surveys remain crucial to route planning. Route surveys are mandated by law to ensure that over-dimensional loads can safely traverse the proposed route. It involves our experts in a pilot car driving down the roadway to check for obstacles, overhead infrastructure, height clearances, and bridge weight and speed limits. When the load is set to pass near public utilities, the law requires us to inform the involved companies to arrange consent letters and company representatives for the move. The same applies to railway crossings to prevent accidents. When choosing a route, we also consider weather and mass traffic events, which may delay the transport.

  • Interstate 40 (I-40): A major east-west highway connecting Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville.
  • Interstate 24 (I-24): A key route linking Nashville with Kentucky.
  • Interstate 65 (I-65): A north-south route running through central Tennessee.
  • Interstate 75 (I-75): A major north-south corridor passing through Chattanooga and Knoxville.
