When Are Pilot Cars or Escort Vehicles Required in Texas?

Overweight and oversized loads may be required to be accompanied by an escort vehicle or pilot car if:

  • Length: If a shipment is over 110โ€ฒ in length and up to 125โ€ฒ in length, you will need one pilot car in the rear. Over 125โ€ฒ in length requires one pilot car or escort vehicle in the front and one in the rear.
  • Width: Shipments 14 to 16 feet wide will require one pilot car vehicle in front on a 2-lane road and one in the rear on a 4-lane road.  If a shipment is more than 16 feet, one front and one rear pilot car or escort vehicle will be required on all shipments on all roads and highways.
  • Height: A front high pole car is required if the load height exceeds 17โ€ฒ. If the shipment is over 18โ€ฒ, you must have one high pole and one rear escort.
  • Weight: No escort vehicle is required if the shipment can maintain minimum speeds.
  • Overhang: Front overhang up to 20 feet on some 2-lane roads will require one pilot or escort vehicle in the front.  On a 4-lane front overhang, up to 25 feet requires one pilot car (escort) on the rear.  Rear overhang: over 20 feet but not more than 30 feet requires one pilot car (escort) on the rear of the shipment.

Route Surveying in Texas

The Texas  Department of Transportation requires route surveys for oversized loads to ensure they can safely pass the proposed route. Wide Load Shipping is committed to meeting client deadlines and invests resources into route planning. We utilize state-of-the-art software tools and the results of route surveys to pick the best routes for your load. During surveys, our specialists aim to identify any narrow road sections, rail crossings, height clearances, overhead utilities, signs, and bridge weight and speed limits. When utilities like power lines and traffic signals need to be moved, we contact the companies involved, which costs extra. Choosing the correct route minimizes permit wait times and unforeseen delays.

When moving an oversized load in Texas, consider the following:

  • Interstate 10 (I-10): A major east-west highway from El Paso to Houston and into Louisiana.
  • Interstate 35 (I-35): A critical north-south corridor connecting significant cities like San Antonio, Austin, and Dallas.
  • Interstate 20 (I-20): An east-west route passing through Dallas and Fort Worth.
  • Interstate 45 (I-45): Connects Houston and Dallas.
