Utah Pilot Car Services

Wide Load Shipping offers affordable and reliable pilot car services in Utah. We handle the acquisition of permits, insurance covers, police escorts, and relocation of public utilities. Oversized loads have many regulations governing them, which vary by route and can be complex to understand. Our legal department handles each load separately to ensure compliance. Pilot cars are a requirement on public roads for over-dimensional loads to ensure public safety and prevent damage to road infrastructure. Over the years, we have escorted oversized loads of all sizes and shapes. Some examples include dozers, excavators, combine harvesters, mobile homes, and steel beams. When Are Pilot Cars Required in Utah?

Pilot car and escort vehicles are required for heavy hauls in Utah if they meet the following:

  • Length: If a shipment is over 110′ long, you will require one front and one rear pilot car (escort).
  • Width: If a shipment is over 14′ in width, you will be required to have one front and one rear pilot car (escort).
  • Height: It all depends on the proposed routing. If the load’s height exceeds 15 feet, you will be required to have a front high-pole escort. If the height is 17 feet, you will likely be required to have a high-pole escort in front of the load. Always call and speak with the authorities directly for clarification.
  • Weight: Check with the Utah port to see if your weight class requires a pilot car or escort.
  • Overhang: There are no specified limits. They like to see this for themselves at the ports. If your load is secure and safe-looking but not too long overall and has flags/amber lights, then you may not be required to have a pilot car.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements in Utah

Utah has several regulations on pilot vehicles seeking to operate in the state. A pilot car (escort) driver must have certified training to operate in Utah. Vehicle-specific requirements include:

  • Pilot cars (escort vehicles) must have a maximum weight of 12,000 pounds, and the vehicle’s wheelbase must be a minimum of 96″ to qualify.
  • The appropriate signs must be mounted on the very top of your vehicle. This sign must be no less than five ′ in width and 10″ in height with a yellow background with black letters no less than 8″ in height and 1″ thick.  An extra banner that is no less than 7′ x 18″ in case the load loses the one that marks it must state “OVERSIZE LOAD.”
  • The vehicle must have 2 – 6″ (minimum) amber warning lights mounted on each side of the sign. The lights must either rotate or strobe and be rated at 1,000 candle power. They must be visible 360 degrees from a minimum distance of 500′ and mounted on a lightbar. It should be noted that the amber lights must be AAMVA certified.
  • They must have a CB radio or 2-way communication device (POWERFUL) and be in constant contact with the shipment’s truck driver at all times.
  • The pilot car must also carry the following: 24″ minimum size stop/slow hand-held paddle sign, eight igniting and burning road flares, eight reflective road triangles, a hard hat, reflective safety vest or jacket, a large flashlight that runs on DC batteries with additional batteries, three orange traffic cones with a minimum height of 18″, non-conductive height measuring device (height pole), fire extinguisher with an electrical rating and a first aid kit.  Of course, your vehicle must have a jack, spare time, and a lug wrench.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Utah

Route surveying is a legal requirement in many states. The process entails our specialist driving down a proposed route to check for any narrow sections, overhead utilities and signs, height clearances, railway crossings, and bridge speed and weight limits. Wide Load Shipping contacts the owners of overhead utilities, like power lines and traffic signals, to arrange for temporary relocation when not needed. For railway crossings, we inform rail companies when heavy hauls are going through crossings to ensure there are no schedule conflicts that may result in accidents. We can guarantee our customers timely deliveries each time through proper and detailed route surveys. We always account for weather, traffic patterns, and travel restrictions. Some of the best routes for heavy hauls in Utah are:

  • I-15: A major north-south route connects Arizona to Idaho.
  • I-80: East-west route through Salt Lake City.
  • I-70: Connects I-15 to Colorado.
  • US-6: Alternative east-west route, connects to I-70 and I-15.
