Vermont Pilot Car Services

Wide Load Shipping offers personalized pilot car services in Vermont and the surrounding states. We have over a decade of experience guiding oversized loads across the Green Mountain State. Our services are easy to customize to fit the specifics of your project. The laws governing oversized transports are comprehensive and require professional services to ensure compliance. We handle obtaining permits, insurance covers, and consent letters from utility companies. Vermont is known for its hilly and rugged terrain, challenging the movement of over-dimensional loads. Our drivers are well versed with the local topography and have operated in the locality for years. Pilot cars accompany oversized loads on public roads to ensure public and load safety.  We ship various loads, including agricultural machinery, manufactured home units, and prefabrications. When are Pilot vehicles Required in Vermont?

The number of required pilot and escort vehicles varies and is mostly decided by the Vermont Agency of Transportation. It may vary due to factors like the road taken, the time of the year, and the dimensions above the legal limit. The standard requirements are:

  • Length: Loads  80′ or greater require one escort vehicle.
  • Width: Loads 12′ wide or greater require one escort vehicle.
  • Height: Escorts are usually not required, but those over 14′ height are very restricted.
  • Overhang: Overhangs 15′ or greater require one escort vehicle.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements in Vermont

The state has the following  pilot car or escort vehicle requirements as well as  mandatory operator certifications:

  • All pilot cars and escort vehicles must have a manufacturer’s gross weight rating not exceeding 20,000 pounds to qualify.
  • All pilot cars/escort vehicles must display a bumper or roof-mounted “OVERSIZE LOAD” sign visible from both the front and rear of the vehicle.  The sign must be at least 6 feet long and 12 inches tall, yellow in color, with black letters no less than 5 inches tall and 1 inch wide.
  • The vehicle must have four safety flags displayed in red or orange. Each flag must be at least 12 inches long, square, and high and mounted at 40—to 70-degree angles on all four corners.
  • All pilot cars (escort vehicles) must have a CB radio or 2-way communication device and be in contact with their shipment at ALL times.
  • Headlights must be turned on when operating.
  • It is our opinion that pilot cars (escort vehicles) should have the minimum requirements as well, which include the following: 1 – 5 pound fire extinguishers type A, B, and C, a paddle sign with the word “STOP” on one side and “SLOW” on the other with dimensions of no less than 18″ in diameter with a minimum of 6″ letters, a red safety-colored flag with a handle no less than 18″ square, three reflective emergency road triangles or 18″ traffic cones, at least one extra OVERSIZE LOAD and  WIDE LOAD banner (yellow with black lettering), a safety-colored (red, orange, yellow, or lime green) vest, jacket, or shirt (used while directing traffic).

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Vermont

Wide Load Shipping ensures your load takes the quickest and most efficient routes for timely deliveries. We conduct route planning beforehand to prevent unforeseen delays during transport. One crucial part of route planning is route surveying. Route surveying is scouting a route to confirm that a particular oversized load can safely make it through. Our experts drive the route in a pilot car to check for height clearances, bridge weight and speed limits, overhead utilities, low-hanging signs, railway crossings, and narrow road sections. This data is vital in permit applications with some overheight loads mandated to have completed route surveys attached to the application.  The law requires us to inform utility and railway companies when an oversized load is passing by their infrastructure. We liaise with them to plan any necessary relocations or schedule adjustments. Choosing the correct route is the key to a successful oversized transport. In Vermont, consider the following routes when moving oversize and heavy hauls:

  • I-89: Major north-south interstate connecting New Hampshire to Canada.
  • I-91: Runs along the eastern border of Vermont, connecting to Massachusetts and Quebec.
  • US-7: North-south route running along western Vermont.
  • US-2: East-west route, crossing northern Vermont.
  • VT-9: Key east-west highway in southern Vermont, connecting I-91 to New York.
