Virginia Pilot Car Services

Wide Load Shipping is Virginia’s top provider of pilot car services. The transport of oversized loads is governed by many regulations that attract massive fines and penalties if not complied with. Our top-notch legal team ensures that each load is regulation-compliant before setting off. We maintain constant contact with customers to maintain transparency. We handle acquiring oversized permits, insurance covers, and other paperwork. Pilot cars are mandated to ensure the public’s safety and the load and road infrastructure. They are extra pairs of eyes for the driver of the hauling vehicle. We transport any oversized load as long as it’s within the legal limits. For example, roads and bridges have a maximum weight rating. Some types of loads we ship include aircraft parts, wind turbine blades, and large tractors. When Are Pilot Cars Required in Virginia?

The following are the standard Pilot Car and Escort vehicle requirements in the state of Virginia:

  • Length: If a shipment is over 105′ in length combined on a 2-load road, you must have one rear pilot car (escort).  If the overall combination is over 125′ long on multiple-lane roads, you must have one rear pilot car (escort).
  • Width: On 2-lane highways for shipments over 11′ wide, one front and one rear pilot car (escort) is required.  On multiple-lane highways, if over 14′ wide, you must have one front and one rear pilot car (escort).
  • Height: Any shipment that exceeds 14′ 6″ in height will require one front pilot car (escort) equipped with a height pole.  Manufactured homes are required to have one front pilot car with a height pole if the height exceeds 15′ tall.
  • Weight: If routinely permitted, you will likely NOT be required to have an escort.
  • Overhang: If the rear overhang exceeds 1/3 of the trailer length, one escort is required on 2-lane highways. If the rear overhang exceeds 20′ of a single-unit vehicle, one rear escort is required on 2-lane highways per Virginia state shipping regulations.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Virginia

Wide Load Shipping guarantees customers safe and timely deliveries, necessitating route surveys. Route surveying aims to check if a route suits a specific oversized load. During the survey conducted in a pilot car, we check for height clearances, bridge weight, speed limits, overhead utilities, signs, and any narrow road sections. This data is also used to apply for permits and determine the number and type of needed pilot cars. Some road sections may require police escorts. The law also requires us to inform rail authorities of oversized loads going through rail crossings. The same applies to overhead utilities, regardless of whether they need relocation. The best routes for heavy hauls in Virginia are:

  • I-95: A major north-south route connects Virginia to Washington, D.C.
  • I-81: North-south route through western Virginia.
  • I-64: East-west route, connects Hampton Roads to West Virginia.
  • US-58: East-west route across southern Virginia
