When is a Pilot Car Required in Washington?

If your dimensions/weight exceed any of the following, you will need a pilot car or escort.

  • Length: If the load is over 105′, you need one rear pilot car (escort).
  • Width: If over 11′ in width, you must have one front and one rear pilot car (escort).
  • Height: If the load’s height exceeds 14′ 6″, a front-high pole pilot car (escort vehicle) is required.
  • Weight: If this is the only limit you have exceeded, no pilot or escort vehicle is required as long as the tractor maintains minimum road speeds.
  • Overhang: Case by case basis.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Washington

Route planning is important when shipping oversize loads, it allows us to choose the route with the least probability of delays.  Route surveying is crucial to route planning, which involves scouting a route to confirm usability. Our experts drive the route in pilot cars to check for height clearances, bridge weight and speed limits, railway crossings, overhead utilities, and signs. This information is used to acquire permits and determine the number and type of needed pilot cars. Some road sections may require extra police and civilian escorts, depending on the number of lanes. The law also requires us to inform rail authorities of oversized loads passing by their infrastructure. The best routes for oversize and heavy hauls in the state are:

  • I-5: The major north-south route connects Oregon to Canada.
  • I-90: East-west route across Washington, connects Seattle to Idaho.
  • US-2: Connects western Washington to Spokane.
  • SR-18: Connects I-5 to I-90.
  • US-97: North-south route through central Washington.
