Wisconsin Pilot Car Services

Wide Load Shipping is Wisconsin’s top pilot car services provider. Our services are easy to customize and are available all year round. We have over a decade of experience guiding oversized loads across. We handle the entire shipping process, including permits and insurance covers. Oversized loads must comply with multiple regulations like travel restrictions and pilot cars. It’s always best to seek professional services to avoid the fines and penalties associated with non-compliance. We also provide clients with complementary services like transport, loading, and unloading. The law mandates pilot and escort vehicles to maintain road safety. They can be either civilians or police escorts. We transport loads of all shapes and sizes, given they meet weight limits. Examples include construction vehicles, manufactured home units, industrial machinery, and mining machinery. Book our pilot car escort services in Wisconsin today.

When Are Pilot Car and Escort Vehicles Required in Wisconsin?

If a load meets the below criteria, it must have pilot and escort vehicles to move on public roads:

  • Length: For loads 95′ to 110′, one rear pilot car (escort) is required.
  • Width: Loads over 12′ 6″ on some roads require one escort vehicle (but not all), and 15′ to 16′ feet in width need one front escort on non-divided highways or one rear on divided highways.  16′ to 22′ wide requires one police escort on some routes.  Non-divided roads require one police in front, and divided roads require one in the rear.  You never know with this state, as the same load may be able to run at a later date with a civilian escort.
  • Height: It all depends on your route in this state.
  • Weight: Check with Wisconsin State to see if your weight class will require a pilot car/escort.

Pilot Car and Escort Vehicle Requirements in Wisconsin

Wisconsin requires vehicles operating as pilot cars to be certified by the state. To be approved for escort duty, they must meet the following requirements:

  • All pilot cars/escort vehicles must have headlights turned on with hazard lights when moving a load, per Wisconsin state shipping regulations.  An amber light must also be turned on and NEVER used when not escorting.
  • Each vehicle needs two red or orange flags mounted on each side of the vehicle, no less than 18″ square.
  • Pilot cars must have an OVERSIZE LOAD sign mounted on the vehicle’s roof, clearly visible from the front and rear.  This sign needs to be yellow with minimum dimensions of 12″ in height and 60″ in length with black letters no less than 1 1/2″ thick and 10″ in height.
  • Drivers must be a minimum of 18 years of age and have a state-issued escort vehicle operator’s license.
  • The vehicle must be equipped with two horizontally mounted rotating (or strobe) amber-colored flashing lights no less than 4″ in diameter, visible from a 360-degree angle from a minimum of 500 feet.
  • Vehicles must have a CB radio or 2-way communication device and 5-pound fire extinguishers type A, B, and C.  A sign hand help signs with the word “STOP” on one side and “SLOW” on the other with dimensions of no less than 18″ in diameter with a minimum of 6″ letters.

Oversize Load Route Surveying Services in Wisconsin

Route surveying is a legal requirement in many states, including Wisconsin. It determines if a route can safely accommodate oversized loads. A route survey is crucial in helping prevent accidents and damage to road infrastructure. Our specialists drive down the proposed routes to check for narrow sections, overhead utilities, low bridges, railway crossings, and bridge weight limits. This data is used to choose the quickest route and one with minimal permit wait times. At Wide Load Shipping, we coordinate with utility companies to temporarily relocate overhead lines, signs, and traffic signals when necessary. We notify rail companies for railway crossings to avoid schedule conflicts that could lead to accidents. When moving heavy hauls in Wisconsin, consider the following routes:

  • I-94: Major east-west route that connects Minnesota to Milwaukee and Chicago.
  • I-90: The north-south route connects southern Wisconsin to Minnesota.
  • I-43: Runs from Beloit through Milwaukee to Green Bay.
  • US-4: North-south route from Milwaukee to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
