US and Canada Regulations.

2021 USA Canada truck driver border crossing requirements.

The following rules and regulations apply to all US citizens crossing over into Canada:

Passports:  All US citizens must have a valid US passport or you will NOT be allowed entry into Canada.

Convictions: A simple DUI conviction or any criminal conviction of a felony charge will exclude you from eligibility for entering Canada.  If you have any doubt about your record or eligibility you should check with Canadian customs before approaching the border of the USA/Canada.  It is important for you to know that Canada does NOT want anyone with a criminal conviction allowed entry into the country.

Loads/Shipments to/thru Canada:  Shipments into Canada are required to obtain electronic clearing by an authorized  Canadian customs border broker.  If you are taking a shipment into Canada you must have a PARS BAR CODE number that will be assigned to the shipment you are hauling.  A PARS BAR CODE STICKER must be affixed to the bills of lading for that shipment before being submitted (faxed) to the Canadian customs border broker by the shipper.  The broker will include this PARS BAR CODE NUMBER with the electronic file they send to Canadian customs officials when filing for clearance.  The driver will then give the lading bills with the PARS BAR CODE STICKER attached to Canadian customs officials which will clear the shipment.  This process usually takes a certified Canadian customs broker about 2 hours to get filed with the Canadian customs authorities.

Loads/shipments to the USA:  Shipment into the USA must be pre-cleared in order to cross the USA/Canada border.  You MUST have pre-clearance BEFORE approaching any USA border.  The USA system is called the ACE ELECTRONIC E-MANIFEST and must be completed for every shipment that enters the USA.  If you require an ACE MANIFEST you will be required to have a US border customs broker prepare your crossing with the US government so you can be assigned a manifest number.  Once the information is submitted to the US customs broker the process usually takes about 2 hours.  For US crossings you must include the driver’s passport number with the ACE E-MANIFEST filing.

  1. my name is dan. I have a crane in Edmonton Alberta that needs to be transported to the port of Houston for export. This item is not any way to remain anywhere in the US except for passage to the port. What would I need to move this item in terms of passing through the border. Thank you.

    1. Well, please pardon the delay as you got lost in a million unrelated posts. You’ve probably already figured this out: a good customs broker will do.

  2. Hi, my name is Juan Martinez. I live in El Paso, Tx (USA); I need information for all the requirements, permits, licenses etc.. to transport loads from Mexico into Canada, or from the US into Canada, on semitrucks or 18 wheels.

Thank you very much for your attention
